JioHotstar Tamil series Muthu Alias Kaattaan starts off with a bizarre case of a severed human head in a quiet village that hardly witnesses any crimes. This bizarre case acts as a lifeline for a police station that was on the verge of closure, and a group of rather laid-back cops are forced to take action. As the investigation begins, the officers hear about the life of a man named Muthu. However, they find that every person they meet seems to know a different life about this man. What begins as a murder mystery turns out to be a complex story about a man whose life cannot be defined within a single narrative.
The biggest surprise about Tamil series Muthu Alias Kaattaan is that it is full of surprises. If you go into this show expecting a tight, edge-of-your-seat thriller, you might find that it is misleading. While you might expect a series like this to delve deeply into the “who” and “how” of the crime, it goes heavy on the “who was he” of Muthu. This creates a rather contemplative series rather than a thriller.
Vijay Sethupathi, as can be expected, is the heart and soul of the show. Even when he is not physically present in the scene, the presence of his character is palpable. Sethupathi’s portrayal of the character is understated and deeply internalised, allowing the audience to get a glimpse of the person behind the enigma. There is something intense about the way Sethupathi has played the character of Muthu that makes him appear believable and unbelievable at the same time. It is the kind of role that Sethupathi is best suited for.
The supporting cast is doing a good job of keeping the story together. Muthukumar, in his role as a sharp sub-inspector, brings a certain degree of sharpness to the investigation. Vadivel Murugan, in his role as a lovable police constable trying to make his station relevant, brings a certain earthiness to the story. Milind Soman and Sudev Nair, even though they are not always in the main action, do a significant job in giving a fuller picture of Muthu’s life. Every character, no matter how small their role is, adds a new dimension to the story, reinforcing that a person may be different things to different people.

What works well in JioHotstar’s Muthu Alias Kaattaan is that it is a grounded story. The environment and the people in the village are rustic and unrefined, and the investigation is not overly sophisticated. There is something simple and almost philosophical in the way the story is presented. It’s nice to see the series take its own time in establishing Muthu’s world and the various facets of his life.
However, it is also where the Tamil series Muthu Alias Kaattaan fails, as it feels like it is taking its time at 10 episodes, and some parts do not really contribute that much to the story. There are some parts of this series that feel like it is taking too much time and are really putting the viewer’s patience to the test. A good editing job could have really helped this series and made it more enjoyable without affecting the actual experience.
The tone of this series is another interesting aspect that can be taken note of. It is not really dark and gritty like most crime drama series. It is more grounded, but not really that serious all the time. While this is what makes this series different from the rest, it is a shame that it is not really bringing any kind of tension that one might expect from a murder story. The mystery does not grab you in a conventional manner, and this might be a problem for some.
