Matchbox The Movie Review: Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for his work on the Extraction franchise. The film stars John Cena as Sean Walker, alongside Jessica Biel as Aimee, Sam Richardson as Crosby, Teyonah Parris as Charmaine, Arturo Castro as Ted, Danai Gurira as Helen, and Golshifteh Farahani as Robbie. Corey Stoll and Bill Camp also feature in the ensemble. Based on Mattel’s popular Matchbox toy car brand, the Apple TV+ film has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes.
Matchbox The Movie Review
Apple TV+ Matchbox The Movie revolves around Sean Walker, who was once a part of a childhood friends group called the Matchbox Gang. Sean moves away from his Ohio small town and ends up being a highly trained secret agent. Some years later, Sean comes back to his native place and thus brings himself back into the lives of his friends.
What could have been a reunion quickly turns into a perilous task for all the friends of Sean because he somehow gets all of them entangled into a conspiracy at an international level involving the theft of a nuclear bomb. Now the Matchbox Gang is embroiled in an ordeal way above their heads and must come together in order to prove themselves innocent before anything worse happens.
The thing that I like least about Apple Tv+’s Matchbox: The Movie is that it seems far more fun than what the film actually ends up being. Getting old buddies together after not seeing each other in years would have been a good idea for making a movie about dealing with growing up and losing touch, but then finding out if these people you once knew are still who you thought they were. Unfortunately, instead, it serves as nothing more than a means of getting the average folks together for an amazing spy adventure.

Another area where the Matchbox movie branding could have been utilised even more was the childhood aspect. These toys should be representative of something that the characters had together when they were children, giving their relationship some background that predates the action of the movie. It is an absolutely fine basis for a family-oriented adventure. At the same time, sometimes it seems that the movie is more focused on making viewers remember the brand than on revealing what these memories really mean to the characters. Nostalgia is much more effective when it triggers emotion rather than constantly reminding viewers of the product causing it.
Another lost chance comes in the form of Sean. John Cena is well-suited to roles in which he plays an action hero who can combine physical prowess and a touch of humour; both aspects fit perfectly with the film. The problem, though, is that it is hard to relate to Cena’s character other than through his ability to deal with danger.
Sean has been gone from his hometown for years, and his return would make for some complex emotions to be expressed. There is potential to examine how different he has become from the kid he once was to the agent he has become now. But because the film moves so fast from reunion to a crisis, this contrast is hardly ever explored in full detail.

The character of Aimee from Jessica Biel is similar. As a paramedic and as one of Sean’s friends, she has the capacity to bring a certain amount of down-to-earthness to an already crazy situation. But the experience of Sean and his past connection to her should have added some other dimension to their reunion. However, the relationship seems to be too much of a common element in a typical action comedy film rather than a product of the time that they have spent away from each other.
The Supporting characters are also provided with personality traits and desires but do not really develop throughout the movie. Crosby, Charmaine, and Ted contribute to making the ensemble of characters who they are, and Sam Richardson brings some comedic value into the movie. However, most of the time these characters can be seen as having been put into certain places within the adventure and not as people whose reactions are individualised. The normality of their lives could have added an element of comedy to the spy thriller storyline and made it more emotional. Instead, the movie focuses on predictable jokes involving normal people being put into unusual situations.

All the same, there is some worth in this aspect of the 2026 Matchbox: The Movie. For instance, Hargrave’s background as a stuntman and action director shows in the physical actions. The chases, the clashes, and the global nature of the mission bring some excitement into the movie. However, as much as it is true that the adventure movie must incorporate movement and speed considering that it is about Matchbox cars, bigger does not necessarily mean better. This excitement becomes less appealing because the characters involved are not very exciting themselves.
The comedy also fails to flow consistently. Some lines do work well, especially where Richardson is given space to exploit the growing ridiculousness of the situation, but the jokes tend to be somewhat predictable. The movie seems to present outrageous situations as opportunities for quick comments instead of allowing humour to stem from the situation. Therefore, the comedy seldom emerges naturally out of the characters and the relations between them. Moreover, the screenplay employs clichés common to spy movies, so that the entire conspiracy ends up seeming like a set of standard events.

Apple TV+ Matchbox The Movie Review: Summing Up
Overall, 2026 Matchbox: The Movie may not be unwatchable, although I cannot help but wonder how much I will be able to remember when the closing credits roll around. I understand the idea behind bringing together childhood friendship, toys, and global adventure. It’s just unfortunate that the movie did not spend any time working with these ideas coherently. The actors in the movie have skill, the action is well staged, and the concept is good enough for a fun family film.
