Just One Look Review: Directed by Marek Lechki and Monika Filipowicz, Tylko jedno spojrzenie is the latest Harlan Coben adaptation on Netflix. It is starring Maria Dębska as Greta, with support from Cezary Łukaszewicz, Piotr Stramowski, Mirosław Zbrojewicz and others. This Polish thriller consists of eight episodes at approximately 45 minutes each, and it will transport you through a suspense-filled ride with secrets, lies, and surprises.

Just One Look Review

The series starts with Greta’s discovery of an old photograph in a set of new pictures she has developed. It is just one photograph, but it completely disrupts her life. Her husband, Jacek, acts strangely when she asks him about it, and then, before she knows it, he has disappeared. Which makes Greta’s desperate with a quest of questions, which takes her down a road of darkness and peril. And the best part is the more she investigates, the more shocking the truth proves to be.

One thing I really loved about Netflix’s Just One Look is the way it grabs you so fast. Some thrillers take a while to establish the mystery, but this one drops you in the middle of it. After the first episode, you already have so many questions—Who took Jacek? Why is he not telling the truth about the photo? What really went down in Greta’s past? You can’t help but keep watching because you have to know the answers.

And let me tell you, just when you’ve thought you’ve got it, the show introduces another twist to catch you off guard once again. The twists and turns just keep going, and tension never ceases. Every episode keeps you wanting more, and that is perfect for binge-watching.

The Polish series Just One Look does an excellent job of making everything creepy and disturbing. The background music is especially good—it’s music that gets your stomach because you know something awful is going to occur. Even the most ordinary scenes are heavy, like something is going to happen wrong in the area.

Visually, it is darker and grittier compared to some other Harlan Coben TV series like The Stranger or Fool Me Once. It is well made in creating suspense through cinematography, with copious low-level lighting and tight shots that put you trapped with Greta’s nightmare.

Maria Dębska is wonderful as Greta. She is so convincingly full of life that you just can’t help but pity her. The way she is frightened, lost, and bewildered at times, but how she never gives up hope. What I liked best is that she never becomes too much of herself. She is intelligent, obstinate, and ready to risk everything to discover the truth.

Her feelings are believable. When she panics, you panic with her. When she’s angry, you’re angry too. It’s difficult to act a character like this without making them look like they’re overacting, but Maria Dębska succeeds.

The supporting cast is just as good. Mirosław Zbrojewicz, an ex-prosecutor searching for his daughter’s killer, adds yet more tension to the tale. His scenes are the tensest of all, and you can feel the intensity of his rage and his grief.

If you’ve watched the other Harlan Coben series, you’ll recognize the formula—past deceit, lies, and an lead character attempting to put the pieces together. Just One Look is a shade different, however. It’s darker and more intense, and a far cry from as sparkly as something like Safe or Fool Me Once.

It’s better than Missing You (which I was disappointed with). That being said, this one is well worth a watch if you enjoy mystery thrillers. It has that same binge-watch feel where you don’t want to stop watching it in one sitting.

Summing Up

I really liked the Just One Look series. It’s suspenseful, twisty, and has you on the edge of your seat until the end. The dark atmosphere, great acting, and never-ending suspense make it a thriller fan’s must-watch. Just a heads up—you may find yourself watching it in the afternoon and find yourself at midnight without realizing it because you just had to keep watching to see what comes next. It’s that addictive.
