Heartstopper Forever Review: Directed by Wash Westmoreland and written by Alice Oseman, who once again adapts her beloved graphic novels with warmth and sincerity. Starring Kit Connor as Nick Nelson and Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, the film also brings back William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood and Leila Khan, allowing the entire friend group to take one final bow together.
Heartstopper Forever Review
Netflix film Heartstopper Forever continues from where it left off in season 3, with the focus on Nick and Charlie, who are facing their greatest test of faith in their relationship. Going to university, which once seemed far off in the distance, now poses a very real threat of separation between the two, while Charlie, for the first time, begins to assert his own identity separate from being Nick’s boyfriend. While they both struggle with what it means to become adults and pursue their own dreams, their other friends find themselves facing similar choices of love, ambition and maturity.
What I love most about Netflix’s Heartstopper Forever is the fact that it does not create drama by introducing villains from the outside. The drama arises from a more relatable source – change. There is no one out there who wants to pull Nick and Charlie apart; the villain in this case is uncertainty, which I think the movie captured so well, especially since the future can be scary when your whole life has been revolving around someone.
The anxiety felt by Nick takes over the entire emotional side of the movie, and surprisingly, I found this refreshing. Most of the episodes in the series saw Charlie struggling with her problems, but this time around, it gives Nick the opportunity to showcase the other sides of him that we hadn’t seen yet. It starts with seeing how hard it is for him to fill out his application for university because he cannot cope with the thought of being away from Charlie. The way he starts withdrawing from everyone he comes into contact with by not talking and always acting like everything is okay just seems so genuine because it makes you realise that anxiety doesn’t go away overnight.
However, what really caught my attention was Charlie’s development as a character. Unlike being portrayed as the passive dependent one again, Charlie emerges as someone who is able to support other people but still able to take care of himself. The plot about him running for head boy and ensuring the safety of the queer kids at the school is not just a sub-plot to add inspiration to the story; instead, it clearly reflects how he has developed as a person since the first novel. Even though some of Charlie’s suggestions are denied by the administration, Charlie continues to fight, as he has understood that existence itself could be a form of protest.
It is likely the most frustrating scene in the entire Heartstopper Forever movie, but it is not due to poor writing. This scene frustrates me because both characters are caught up in their emotions, which they cannot articulate. I can see where Charlie gets her suggestion for taking a break, and yet at the same time, Nick hears the suggestion as the final blow. It frustrates me to no end because their lack of honest communication is frustrating due to the fact that I know how much they love each other. The scene was frustrating because I just wanted them to sit down and tell the truth without letting their fear turn everything they said into its opposite.
The duo continues to show why they are an iconic couple. There was never chemistry between the two through any love speech. A look, a moment of awkward silence, or even a smile can say everything without saying a single word. It is one of the most controlled performances Connor has delivered on the show, letting Nick’s anxiety slowly build up under every conversation. On the other hand, Locke’s delivery of confidence is amazing to see because it clearly shows how far the character has grown. Unlike before, when Charlie used to have emotional scars, he now has a mission to heal others.
Also, it’s nice to see that the secondary characters do not get overlooked. The story between Tao and Elle brings to light the harsh truth that even though you love another person, it does not mean that your hopes and dreams will necessarily be shared by the other individual. Darcy and Tara continue to serve as the beating heart of the gang, and Isaac finally gets a chance to pursue his own future by following his dreams instead of watching what others do. Sahar, Imogen, Tori, and Michael all get some good screen time that proves that it is still an ensemble cast.
My only real criticism of the film is the pace. Being just under two hours long, there are parts where the story goes on about certain emotional scenes for just a tad too long. Certain subplots take quite a while to set up, but resolve themselves very quickly. This gives an imbalance between Nick and Charlie’s story and the rest of the characters’. There are also some scenes that seem very redundant in terms of delivering emotional dialogue. But then again, nothing ever gets too boring.
What makes the 2026 Heartstopper Forever film succeed for me is that it never forgets why the show was special to begin with. All the romantic elements aside, this movie deals with how you find someone who will make your life less scary. Whether it’s Charlie standing up for what she believes in, Nick coming into his own emotionally, or their friends always being there, the movie constantly reinforces the notion that growing up isn’t just about dealing with the unknown by yourself.

Heartstopper Forever isn’t a perfect film by any means, but it does what I wanted it to do. That being said, it recognises the fact that even love alone doesn’t have the answer for everything. At the same time, it recognises that it is possible for communication, friendship and individual growth to help people get back on track.
