Four Hands Two Sonatas Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Park Hyeon-seok and written by Shin Yi-won, 포핸즈 stars Song Kang as Kang Pi-o, Lee Jun-young as Choi Jeong-yo and Jang Gyu-ri as Hong Jae-in. The supporting cast includes Kim Joo-heon, Yoon Se-ah, Jung Jin-young, Seo Jae-hee, Kim Hye-hwa, Lee Myeong-ro, Yoo Tae-joo, Lee Sang-jun and others.
Four Hands Two Sonatas Episode 1 Recap
From the outset, it becomes apparent that this is going to be far from a tale of talented students vying against each other through music. Episode 1 of Four Hands Two Sonatas starts in Prague in 2017 at the International Harmonie Competition. Kang Pi-o is performing, attempting to finish even after being injured and showing blood. While all this is going on, Choi Jeong-yo is kidnapped in a vehicle. He tries to get himself an escape route; however, the scene gets bloody after he gets shot by one of the kidnappers. In the end, he finds himself in the water. The episode now shifts its focus away from this disturbing future to the past by six months.
Back home in Korea, Pi-o is regarded as an exceptional young pianist having won the Lake Erie International Junior Competition. However, despite his achievements, Pi-o does not feel validated by the people who mean a lot to him. Firstly, his grandfather, the famous Maestro Kang Seung-woon, does not validate his achievements. Furthermore, his classmates torment him by using his difficult past. Pi-o also encounters Hong Jae-in, a very talented cellist who asks him to accompany her in competitions. Pi-o declines her proposal, considering himself too experienced to play with her. Nevertheless, he learns very soon that Jae-in is not just another person who would take his refusal easily.
But Pi-o’s greatest troublemaker is not another student but rather his own family. The boy’s mother, Kang Ji-hye, who was mostly responsible for raising him, still harbours hope that her own father would someday recognise Pi-o as his grandson. While watching Hyun-soo play the piano as part of Seung-woon’s orchestra, Pi-o develops a fascination with his playing. The young man decides to make Hyun-soo his new teacher. But again, Pi-o receives no answer from either of these men. Hyun-soo thinks at first that the boy has already gained enough technical skills and thus he has little to offer him, while Seung-woon only criticises Pi-o and tells him to prove himself.
It all starts to change when Pi-o meets Jeong-yo. Jeong-yo belongs to a totally different world. His father is in heavy debt, and Jeong-yo is compelled to earn money to help overcome this situation. However, despite all the problems he faces, he has a special talent for music. Pi-o observes him while playing his piece and is surprised at his talent for manipulating his music effortlessly. More importantly, he is not just another talented student. Gradually, Pi-o begins to realise that they had met earlier when they were young, and Jeong-yo was the one who had beaten him at the piano.
Finally, Jae-in persuades Jeong-yo to join her and pays him money to practice together with her. His ability impresses Hyun-soo, and Seon-joo, who is the director of Korea Arts High School, gives him a scholarship. Jeong-yo rejects it at first but can no longer avoid taking up the offer when his father runs away, and loan sharks are chasing after him.
As there is no safe place for him anymore, he accepts the scholarship and becomes a student of the same school as Pi-o. This causes immediate tension between the two when Pi-o recalls how Jeong-yo behaved when they met as children. Even when Jeong-yo tries to befriend him, Pi-o distances himself from him. At the end of the Four Hands Two Sonatas episode 1, Pi-o finds out that Jeong-yo practices something he used to play long ago.
Four Hands Two Sonatas Episode 2 Recap
Four Hands Two Sonatas Episode 2 opens with the awkward situation of Pi-o and Jeong-yo being in a more difficult situation. The episode starts with a flash-forward that shows the violent incident involving both characters and continues with the flashback. Pi-o is still bothered by the memory of how he lost to Jeong-yo back in their childhood days. Meanwhile, all that Jeong-yo desires is for Pi-o to recall the bond that used to exist between them, but Pi-o has no intention of becoming his friend. Their characters are almost complete opposites.
Jeong-yo begins to realise just how much Seon-joo is betting on him for the future as well. The scholarship and the chance to attend such an excellent school feel almost too much to him, especially when he realises that his own history does not really mesh well with the elite surroundings of the place. In the outside world, the problems facing Pi-o become worse as well. Seo Professor stops working with Pi-o and tries to ruin his future because Pi-o decided to end their partnership. Ji-hye becomes increasingly concerned about his future, even suggesting that Pi-o should continue his music education abroad. However, Pi-o refuses because getting his grandfather’s blessing is more important to him.
The life of Jeong-yo becomes even more difficult. While working in a convenience store, Jeong-yo faces bullying from the same type of students who are making his life difficult at school. By refusing to sell alcohol to underage people, he gets attacked by them, and this attack ends up destroying the convenience store. As a result of this, he gets fired from the job. Afterwards, when Jeong-yo comes back to the music shop that belonged to his family, he thinks about his mother and all the times she had helped him with music.
His mother’s sheet music was the only thing that made Jeong-yo remember her. When those bullies tear down that sheet music and throw it away, Jeong-yo loses his temper and starts attacking them. The parents of those bullies ask for his expulsion from the school.While Pi-o seems reluctant to get into things, he secretly decides to do something to aid Jeong-yo. He collects the broken sheet music, while Seon-joo finally uncovers something from the convenience store episode, which proves that the bullies had done something to incite Jeong-yo to do so.
Jeong-yo is then reinstated, and Hyun-soo gets more interested in developing his musical talent. Ji-hye then tries to convince Hyun-soo to think about teaching Pi-o some music. Finally, Hyun-soo agrees, but on one strange condition: that Pi-o plays a four-hand piece on the piano along with Jeong-yo at the recital. The problem is that Jeong-yo is extremely afraid of playing on stage. The reason for his fear lies in one unpleasant recollection of his childhood, when his mother had fainted after a musical contest during which he met Pi-o. Jeong-yo thinks that he cannot appear on the stage again no matter how good he is with music.
At first, Pi-o cannot understand why, but instead of leaving Jeong-yo alone in the situation, he finds a solution. Pi-o turns the abandoned auditorium into a training ground, and eventually, the two of them start to play together without any thoughts about the public. The training becomes more like enjoyment of the game and less like preparations for some kind of contest. Pi-o brings Jeong-yo to the street show with strangers and asks him not to think about them but about himself. At the end of Episode 2 of Four Hands Two Sonatas, Jeong-yo manages to play, and the reaction of strangers becomes a little victory for Jeong-yo.
Four Hands Two Sonatas Episode 1-2 Review
The beginning of the Four Hands Two Sonatas K-drama is much more interesting than I anticipated, primarily due to the fact that the drama doesn’t take too long to make sure we understand that there is something deeply wrong going on under the guise of classical music. The very beginning of the story with the kidnapping of Jeong-yo sets up a question which hangs over all the action of the previous timeline. Since I know what is coming in terms of the story’s development, all the things that happen in terms of school rivalry and family pressure seem more significant.
On the other hand, I also feel like the characterisation of some characters in the first episode is deliberate. Pi-o is the one who is highly talented and yet emotionally closed. On the other hand, Jeong-yo is a natural musician whose difficult experiences add to the power of his performances. It is especially interesting how Song Kang plays Pi-o because the character’s arrogance was not made purely for the purpose of having a rival in the drama. Everything becomes more reasonable when one learns about the character’s complicated relationships with his grandfather. Pi-o really needs validation from a person who always claims that he is not good enough.
In that case, his pursuit of perfection sounds like a form of self-protection. The performance of Lee Jun-young playing Jeong-yo is totally different. The character goes through financial troubles, family issues and the loss of his mother, but his acting doesn’t make him someone who always asks for pity. It seems like Jeong-yo’s relationship with music is quite natural; therefore, the contrast with Pi-o looks very believable. Finally, I also liked how Jang Gyu-ri played Jae-in because she added the necessary self-confidence and humour to the atmosphere of tension.
Supporting actors further contribute to the engagement of the audience with the first two episodes. While Pi-o’s mother, Ji-hye, is obviously in love with her child, she cares too much about Pi-o’s future for him to sometimes be understood by her son. Seung-woon is intended to irritate Pi-o with his denial of Pi-o as a musician because the denial brings a lot of stress onto the young artist. Hyun-soo becomes an intriguing adult character as he sees something wrong with Pi-o’s performance and criticises the pianist instead of appreciating his techniques. This observation of Hyun-soo gains even more importance after Jeong-yo appears. The boy has skills Pi-o lacks despite having years of training.
It was in Four Hands Two Sonatas Ep 2 that I found myself getting more involved in the relationship between the main two characters. Although I felt that the bullying plotline was quite weak since it seemed to be just another means to put Jeong-yo in trouble, it turned out to be useful in the end because it gave Pi-o an opportunity to help Jeong-yo without having to show explicitly that he cares about him.
What I appreciated more was the fear Jeong-yo felt while on stage. Unlike the typical scenario of overcoming the problem in just one inspirational talk, the episode relates his fear to his childhood and his mother’s death. It is nice that Pi-o is not trying to do something supernatural with Jeong-yo but just wants to give him an opportunity to feel at ease while performing.
Four Hands Two Sonatas Review: Summing Up
On the whole, Korean drama Four Hands Two Sonatas has certain recognisable features; however, the use of classical music, a complex conflict, pressure from the family, and the forewarning flash-forward give the show its own character. Even more important, now I have become interested in finding out what really happened in the future between Pi-o and Jeong-yo.
From the beginning, we learn that their relationship will be challenged at some point in time; at the same time, we see the end of episode two and find out that once they have the opportunity to unite via music, everything can change very quickly. Thus, after watching Pi-o and Jeong-yo transform from childhood rivals to opponents and then, perhaps, to friends, I definitely would like to find out if they will be able to maintain their new connection.
