Flex x Cop Season 2 Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Kim Jae-hong and written by Kim Ba-da, Disney+ series 재벌X형사 시즌2 stars Ahn Bo-hyun as Jin I-soo, Jung Eun-chae as Joo Hye-ra, Yoo Seung-ho as Yoo Seong-won, Kang Sang-jun as Park Jun-young, and Kim Shin-bi as Choi Kyung-jin, alongside Kim Hye-eun, Kim Jae-rok, Moon Jin-seung and others.

Flex x Cop Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of Flex x Cop Season 2 introduces Jin I-soo right away. The trio of I-soo, Park Jun-young, and Choi Kyung-jin head all the way to Mexico in a Hansu Group’s private plane to catch a group of scammers who have fled the country after stealing a massive sum of money. It’s not an ordinary raid, as they have to dress up as a mariachi band before attacking the criminals. Soon enough, it becomes a wild scuffle, but with the local police’s help, the detectives manage to arrest the scammers.

Meanwhile, at Gangha Police Station, I-soo is facing a totally different situation. A group from a reality show has been filming him about his work as a chaebol heir who became a detective. While taking the film crew on a tour of the police station, I-soo finds a mysterious note which invites him to play a game. However, when I-soo, along with the team, goes to one of Hansu’s department stores, they find out that the game turns out to be very dangerous because it has a homemade bomb that I-soo inadvertently triggers. This results in the evacuation of the store and the arrival of the bomb disposal unit.

This is where we see another heroine of the story – Joo Hye-ra, who starts interacting with I-soo in a funny way. She is his former instructor from the police academy. This problem gets even worse after another explosive is detonated during a launch event where I-soo is present. Hye-ra thinks someone is out to get him, but I-soo is sceptical and does not want to believe it. Jun-young and Kyung-jin are always near I-soo to protect him, but Hye-ra keeps following them despite all I-soo’s efforts to make her leave.

After the second mini-bomb is detonated, I-soo understands it is not some kind of prank. This scares him, and Hye-ra tells them to stop filming the reality show and advises him to consider all those who might want him dead. At first, the probe comes up with a number of leads, such as Noh Jin-su, who was a waiter at the opening and whose father used to work for Hansu Chemical. In addition, Park Gyeong-tae is another person whose name is put forward since he had been arrested before as a bomb-making suspect. Both men are not the culprit in question.

As for Jin-su, he only happens to be an obsessed stalker, whereas Gyeong-tae stopped making bombs and is now putting his talents to a different use. In addition, I-soo decides to see his brother in prison to see whether he knows something about those who wish him harm. Seung-ju provides I-soo with a crucial hint.

However, at the end of Flex x Cop Season Episode 1, the situation turns out to be life-threatening. Hye-ra thinks of moving I-soo to a safe place; however, a bomb is hidden in I-soo’s car. When I-soo opens the box, the countdown starts, and she has very few minutes left before the bomb explodes. The bomb would explode with a huge radius of explosion, and since the car is travelling through a crowded place, I-soo’s decision is to take the car to a nearby lake.

Flex x Cop Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of Flex x Cop Season 2 picks up right where the first one ended. I-soo and Hye-ra get out of the car just before the explosion takes place in the lake. I-soo is subsequently taken to Hye-ra’s house, where he gets temporary refuge. As Jun-young protects him, Kyung-jin heads back to the station to work on investigating this recent attempt. In addition to that, the press has gathered outside the police station; however, the police decide not to reveal any information about this case since this is the third time I-soo was attacked.

However, it soon becomes clear that the threats go beyond just scaring I-soo. After being hosted by Hye-ra, I-soo gets a threat, in which Mr Choi is seen to be a hostage. He is asked to report to the specified place alone. Upon realising that I-soo is missing, Jun-young and the team follow him to his family estate, where I-soo confronts the assistant director of the reality show. The latter has received a similar horrific message, in which he is threatened with the death of his mother if he fails to record I-soo’s death.

This becomes yet another sophisticated trap set up. A bomb is found, and I-soo succeeds in opening the bunker so that he and the assistant director can stay there. However, the person responsible for all these attacks has already taken into consideration this possibility. There is one more bomb inside the bunker itself, which explodes just as Hye-ra gets to the estate. Luckily, I-soo and the assistant director manage to survive. In the end, it becomes clear that the images of hostages are fake and were made by means of deepfake technology.

Afterwards, Hye-ra develops a scheme to make the killer think that both I-soo and the assistant director are dead. In the meantime, the forensic team identifies part of the fingerprint of one of the bombs. The print leads them to Jang Hyeon-suk, who works for the R&D department of Mirae Electronics without having a criminal record. However, during the investigation, Hye-ra finds out another thing – the appearance of I-soo on the reality show was first suggested by Jang Hyeon-woo, the brother of Hyeon-suk and the assistant director himself.

At some point, I-soo and Hye-ra manage to understand why such complex attacks were carried out against him. It was not their intention to kill I-soo; on the contrary, they needed him because only his fingerprint could open the bunker. This bunker belonged to their family before, and their father told them that something extremely valuable was concealed there. After many attacks, the brothers finally get to the bunker and find what they believe to be a treasure. In fact, it turns out that this is proof of their family’s collaboration with the Empire of Japan.

Now that the case has been solved, the reality TV show transforms the investigation process into an incredibly successful one. Indeed, it was even narrated by I-soo. The young man gets very happy with all the interest the episode has generated. However, what he has not realised yet is that the surprise has just begun. Mr Park informs I-soo that a new leader of Team 1 will be coming to the police station. I-soo goes crazy with happiness and decides to make a huge welcome for him. At the end of Flex x Cop Season 2 episode 2, his excitement disappears when the new leader arrives and turns out to be none other than Joo Hye-ra.

Flex x Cop Season 2 Episode 1-2 Review

I have to say that the first two episodes of Season 2 of Flex x Cop have been quite enjoyable to watch. The show knows how to make itself fun, as it does with the first season, while providing I-soo with another character to interact with. With the opening Mexico scene, it is clear that it is once again back to the fun action-comedy style of the show, and I-soo making use of the full capabilities of his chaebol status in solving police cases is still the best part of the series.

The part that I liked best in the Flex x Cop season 2 ep 1 was the appearance of Joo Hye-ra. It is obvious that she is not just some kind of character who was included in the plot in order to replace someone from last season. She is not only an individual person with her own character traits but also has her own career and, most importantly, a completely different attitude towards I-soo. She is not impressed by his money or status and can easily make fun of him for his inappropriate behaviour. This immediately adds some humour to their interactions.

The chemistry between Bo-hyun and Eun-chae is rather surprising, and I would be really curious about their further development now. The performance in both these episodes is yet another element that makes them so great. The actor who plays I-soo keeps adding to the funny side of I-soo by portraying the boyish confidence he has along with moments where he shows how vulnerable he can be when the constant bomb threats start to frighten him. In addition, Jung Eun-chae, who plays Hye-ra, adds an air of seriousness to her character that just complements I-soo’s in their scenes together.

Kang Sang-jun and Kim Shin-bi also keep on playing significant roles in the team’s chemistry as Jun-young and Kyung-jin, respectively, and I am glad they still continue to play an active part in solving cases alongside I-soo. In the case of Flex x Cop season 2 ep 2, the aspect I found good was the solution of the mystery that the elaborate scheme to kill was not really meant to kill I-soo. It is nice how the twists revolving around the Jang brothers, the bunker and their family history get nicely solved.

What else I found interesting was the previous observation of I-soo’s brother that the motivation of these acts of violence was not revenge, but rather something else, which became quite a good clue in this investigation. What is good is that the story does not look disconnected in the investigation because the twists do not introduce random characters just for the sake of a surprise; they actually add some clues and sense to the whole story. The only thing I did not like was that the reality show crew was following I-soo around.

Flex x Cop Season 2 Review: Summing Up

On the whole, the Flex x Cop Season 2 K-drama is off to a great start thanks to the characters. The first episode is a fun watch; the comedy works, the action is vibrant, and there is no denying that the chemistry that is beginning to form between I-soo and Hye-ra is already among my main reasons for wanting to stick around for more. Even more importantly, the conclusion sets up a new relationship dynamic which will prove to be very intriguing going forward. It makes me eager to find out how Hye-ra manages to cope with the challenge of having I-soo work as her detective amidst the mystery surrounding his life.
