The Netflix Italian film Feel My Voice tells the story of Eletta, a teenager who is born and raised in a deaf community, taking on the responsibility of being the main communication channel between her loved ones and the rest of the world. Eletta works with her family on the farm, interpreting their conversations, and undertaking roles which are beyond what someone of her age can carry out. This changes when Eletta discovers that she has a love for singing – a personal passion that takes her away from everything she is familiar with.
The most interesting thing about Netflix’s Feel My Voice for me was its emotionally rich nature, despite the fact that this story might not be entirely unique. After watching other movies with a similar storyline, such as CODA or Twinkling Watermelon, you will find the plot of this one very predictable. However, the movie still allows us to experience certain emotions thanks to the character development and relationships depicted in it.
The entire film seems to revolve around Sarah Toscano, who delivers an authentic and organic performance. One can easily notice some vulnerability associated with the performance of Eletta, especially when she finds it difficult to express her requirements. She doesn’t learn only about the violin but also about herself without being concerned that she might be neglecting her family. The actress excellently conveys the internal conflict, despite the stereotypical script.
The family unit can be said to be emotionally the core of the entire movie. In Serena Rossi’s role of Eletta’s mother, one will notice that the woman does not only come off as overly protective but also afraid, dependent, and loving, and these emotions blend to provide authenticity in her performance. Also, the family’s other members, namely the father and the brother, enrich the plot as they struggle with their own vulnerabilities and limitations.
The point that I liked about the Italian movie Feel My Voice is that no one is demonised in it. There are no villains; there are people who feel threatened and vulnerable, and there is a person who wants to live their own life, which they have not had up until now. This balance ensures that the story does not become too sentimental.
But, when it comes to the Feel My Voice movie, what really sets it apart is the quieter scenes within the movie. It is during the scenes in which only Eletta is depicted singing, thinking, or trying to comprehend her feelings that make the movie special. This gives the story some breathing room and helps create a stronger connection with the character. The sound (or lack thereof) is also incorporated well into the movie, helping us remember her family’s unique point of view without making it too noticeable.
The characterisation of people, from her friends to the man she loves, helps make the story more enjoyable, although there are times when they do not feel completely fleshed out. However, they play their roles well enough to move the story along without compromising the primary emotional development of the story, which is its most compelling element.
The rural background brings about an element of realism into the film, and the filming techniques blend well with the mood instead of being overpowering. The music is an integral part of the film, but although not all the songs may be memorable, they certainly have an emotional connection to them.
Other than its lack of originality, if I were to single out another flaw in the Netflix film Feel My Voice, then it would be that the film becomes somewhat drawn-out in its middle part. The story can be somewhat repetitive, particularly with regard to emotional conflicts that arise within the movie.

In the end, this is a film that may not surprise you, but will certainly touch you in many little ways. This is a comforting movie that makes us aware of how fragile the harmony between love and freedom can be.
