Dream To You Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Yoo Seon-dong and written by Rachel Eunbea Chung, 그대에게 드림 stars Hwang In-youp as acclaimed filmmaker Woo Soo-bin and Lee Hye-ri as passionate reporter Ju Yi-jae. The romance drama also features Baek Sung-chul, Lee Yul-eum, Lee Sang-yeob, Park Ji-young and others.

Dream To You Episode 1 Recap

Dream To You Episode 1 commences with a trip down memory lane in 2011, when Ju Yi-jae is an enthusiastic high school girl with a great passion for becoming a film director. It is almost impossible for her to be away from her camera since she feels that there is beauty in every minute that she captures through the lens. The young girl has a sweetheart called Woo Soo-bin, whom she loves with all her heart.

At this point, we move on to the current year. By this time, Soo-bin has become a world-famous director by getting an important award for his most recent movie. While delivering a speech at the ceremony, he surprisingly dedicates the award to his very first love, sparking an interest in the media right away. In addition, he reveals his intention to come back to Korea, generating intrigue concerning the woman who became his inspiration.

As for Yi-jae, she has taken an absolutely different path in life. She no longer directs films but reports for TV. While she still smiles through challenging days, it becomes clear that things did not turn out the way she expected. While thinking about Soo-bin’s success during tough times, Yi-jae starts to feel some buried emotions again.

The moment when they come together happens much earlier than Yi-jae expected. Soo-bin shows up at her workplace when she is in a heated debate with her production group. Surprised beyond measure, she runs away rather than say anything to him. The drama rewinds itself back in time so that we can see how things really started.

Soo-bin had transferred to her school many years ago without any definite aim in life. As his parents had already made all the arrangements for his future, he thought that medicine was the only choice for him. He starts changing himself as he sees Yi-jae chasing her passion for films with all her heart.

The natural course of events leads to the development of their friendship into love as time passes by. It culminates in a significant turning point in which Soo-bin defends her loved one from a brutal attacker who tries to damage her precious camera. Later on, he confesses to her that he wants to pursue his own dreams since she inspired him to find them. Their relationship develops through many projects of filmmaking and sharing their ideas, which makes their relationship believable. However, it is clear to the audience that they will end up sad.

Returning to the present, Yi-jae makes it abundantly clear that she never intended to come back. She playfully tells Yi-jae that she is already married when Yi-jae asks whether she is dating somebody else, not wanting Yi-jae to know how affected she is by his presence. However, even though Soo-bin keeps trying to mend the fences, Yi-jae is not about to open up her old wounds again.

Meanwhile, Yi-jae talks to her long-time friend and roommate, Yoo-geon, who harbours ill-will toward Soo-bin because he betrayed Yi-jae and their dreams. Despite his best attempts, Yoo-geon’s acting career is nowhere to be seen, while Oh Ha-na, the actress, is introduced as someone who already thinks poorly of Soo-bin after he rejected her in an audition.

It slowly starts bringing them closer again. Soo-bin finds that Yi-jae has started selling videotapes from their youth and tries to purchase them on purpose. He goes so far as to take out the screenplay they wrote in their childhood to finish it, and wants her to help him. However, she becomes furious and rejects both his screenplay and his attempts to revive the past. As soon as it starts raining hard outside, she gets reminded of many painful things from the past.

Several years ago, she was standing right in front of his house day by day, begging for an explanation of his departure from her. Holding an umbrella given to her by him, Yi-jae starts walking away from him in the rain, leaving him alone, the way she was once left behind. It serves as the perfect ending of episode 1 of Dream To You.

Dream To You Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of Dream To You builds on the lives of both characters in the past as well as in the present, where the awkward relationship between them develops further. The flashbacks show that Yi-jae’s passion for life helped motivate Soo-bin to follow his true calling in filmmaking in spite of his parents’ wishes for him to take up his parents’ practice as doctors. Yi-jae gets recognised for one of her short films, and she happily offers the idea of making a film together.

Their joint screenplay is not just a class project but a symbol of the life they want to lead together in the future. Yet, the pressure from their families is starting to loom large on both of them. Once again in the present, Yi-jae has been sent to shoot a movie at the grape farm, but she finds that the celebrity who has come to visit her on that day is Woo Soo-bin himself. He comes with a bunch of flowers, surprising her instantly. He discloses in the course of the interview that he has come back to Korea to direct a new film by the name of Gyeongseong Love Song.

This information takes everyone in the production house by surprise. While speaking cautiously before the camera, Soo-bin makes it clear that his motive for coming back is anything but professional. While the primary romance storyline is left aside, Dream To You ep 2 moves further with the development of Yoo-geon’s story. Despite all attempts to balance between various delivery tasks and his dream to become an actor, he does not surrender to prejudice against his aspirations. However, an unusual chance presents itself when Oh Ha-na notices him during filming. It turns out that they start getting along, and their mutual relations seem to form a romantic one.

As soon as the shooting ends, Yi-jae is compelled to fix the button she tore from Soo-bin’s shirt in the middle of their interview. The situation becomes grave when the couple starts talking about the screenplay they once wrote together. She tells him that she would give it to him on one condition, and that too on payment of a very hefty amount, which shows that she is not interested in collaborating with him any further. But Soo-bin does not agree to her terms.

For him, the screenplay is worth nothing if he can’t complete it along with her. He reveals his heart, saying that he wants to give back the dream as well as the love he had wasted away in the past due to her. Almost getting a kiss, he is pushed back by her, and she hits him with the bouquet he had got for her. The emotional climax of Dream To You episode 2, comes in when they are able to piece together a bit of what led to their breakup. Having spent days trying to talk to Soo-bin, Yi-jae runs into him in front of his house.

Rather than fight for their future as they had both wanted, Soo-bin simply says that he is moving away to America in order to become a doctor, and dismisses all thoughts about making films as a childish phase. Completely devastated, Yi-jae goes off with the realisation of lost hope weighing on her heart. Before she can even think about what has just happened, she gets into an accident, which sends her to the hospital with serious injuries. Upon waking up, she learns that she has lost her father during her unconscious period.

This episode ends with an air of hope but uncertainty. Yi-jae’s producer provides her with a golden chance for her career, but on one condition that she gets Soo-bin on her show again. While she turns down his offer at first, she cannot help but reconsider his offer as it is something she just cannot overlook. This marks the end of Dream To You kdrama ep 2.

Dream To You Episode 1-2 Review

These first two episodes of Dream To You kdrama felt very comfortable but also heartbreaking. What I really enjoyed about the drama is that it doesn’t jump straight into the romance but rather builds up to the reasons for which Yi-jae cannot forgive Soo-bin. With each flashback comes another level of understanding of their story, and this adds weight to their current interactions. Without a doubt, Hwang In-youp and Lee Hye-ri are the main reasons why these two episodes are amazing.

They have great chemistry no matter what situation they are in: playful teasing, arguments, or even standing still without any interaction. The shameless flirting by Soo-bin should be extremely irritating based on his actions, but Hwang In-youp manages to make this character very likeable. As for Lee Hye-ri, she is amazing as Yi-jae. Her smile while working and the sudden drop of this mask when Soo-bin is near really show the pain that she has experienced all those years.

I was also very entertained by how the supporting cast is already establishing itself in the show. Yoo-geon is an impossible character to dislike, and I am really hoping that the show does not put him in a love triangle because their friendship is way too pure to be ruined by that. The chemistry between him and Ha-na has gotten interesting enough for me to look forward to how their relationship progresses. At the same time, the question behind Soo-bin’s leaving is still far from answered. It really appears that we are only getting one side of the story here, and I am waiting for all of it to explode.

Considering that the storyline of the show is all about first love and giving second chances, Korean drama Dream To You has managed to start off on a pretty great foot. The emotions have been spot-on, there is definitely chemistry, and there is even enough mystery involved in order for me to be hooked on the show. With how well the show continues to balance romance, pain, healing, and answering questions about their past life, it is definitely one of my favourite romance K-drama shows right now.
