Death of the Pastor’s Wife Review: Directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Mike Gasparro, with Gasparro also serving as showrunner, the three-part Netflix series on true crime investigates the life, marriage, and death of Mica Miller, who has been at the centre of much public attention after she was found dead in April 2024. The documentary focuses on interviews with Mica’s friends and family, as well as unknown video clips, as it uncovers the details of her marriage to Pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller and the abuses that have occurred prior to her untimely death.

Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife was especially difficult to digest due to the fact that the story does not open with a mystery surrounding a death. The story takes place earlier on, with a young girl whose life had found direction through her faith. Mica started attending Solid Rock Church when she was a teenager and then later developed a deep bond with the church and its pastor. This was all about to change whenJohn-Paul Miller, who was an older man who was already considered a spiritual authority figure in her life, had an affair with her while they were both still married.
What I found most disturbing about the Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife is the issue of power, marriage, and religion getting intertwined in a single situation. While JP may have been the man Mica married, the reality of the matter is that he was also her pastor and someone she respected before anything else. In essence, there is an extra power element involved here and one that JP allegedly used. The whole series talks about how he allegedly used the Bible to push Mica to do things against her will, mostly sexual acts, which is pretty disturbing to watch since she had sought her moral guidance in it.
It is particularly unsettling to consider the sexual aspect of the situation. As shown in the documentary, John-Paul Miller is said to have coerced Mica into sexual encounters with him on several occasions and to have convinced her that not giving herself to her husband would be sinful. It is not just a marital conflict because the disparity in power cannot be overlooked. There are also accusations of other types of misconduct which involve other parties, secret photographs, and humiliation. After that, it was no longer a matter of a difficult marriage that I saw.
That is where the role of Mica’s faith in the film becomes especially significant. In Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife docuseries, she is not depicted as an individual who has entered into a relationship without any comprehension of its complexity. On the contrary, the complexity of her bond to the religion is revealed in the film. The thing is that she has been really devoted to her faith for many years, which makes it even more tragic that her faith became a weapon against her.
The situation gets much worse for her when Mica finally makes an attempt to detach herself from JP. The documentary describes how stalking, harassment, threats, vandalism, and tracking took place. Even after changing her address and telephone number, she still kept getting tracked down by him. She even had to go to court to get some protection from him.
Follows Mica’s death on April 27, 2024. She made an emergency call to 911, stating that she was planning to kill herself, from Lumber River State Park. Mica was found dead, and her death has been deemed to be a suicide. But the details regarding the final days of her life and her history with JP inevitably pose many questions. The documentary takes great care not to let the questions become facts. JP has not yet been charged with any crimes associated with Mica’s death, although he did receive federal charges for stalking and allegedly lying to the investigators.
I actually admire that. This type of film could easily be turned into a conspiracy movie which wants to find answers even if there is no evidence to support its conclusions. But here, the main goal of the docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife seems to be to try to make us understand Mica and all that she supposedly went through. That is why I would say that the interviews are one of the best parts of the movie, as they help Mica remain a person.
The Death of the Pastor’s Wife is not so much concerned with the creation of an intricate mystery as it is with the demonstration of how control might emerge within the context of a relationship, especially if there was a power imbalance between the two individuals. For me, the most disturbing thing about this story was how religion might somehow be manipulated to become the rationale for an utterly inhuman act.
At the same time, there is a certain sense of shock in knowing that the subject of such claims was a pastor. It is enough just to read the title of this film to grasp the full meaning of it: this person was supposed to lead others on the path of faith, but instead, the documentary shows the claims of a controlling, sexually manipulative private life.
Netflix Death of the Pastor’s Wife Review: Summing Up
Death of the Pastor’s Wife, for my part, is not the most satisfying documentary in terms of solving all the mysteries, yet its meaning is found somewhere else. First of all, it provides a voice for Mica from people who knew her, and secondly, we are compelled to notice those warning signs that get concealed under the combination of authority, faith, and abuse. What is more, I was shocked by how easy it could be for something so sacred as faith to be misused because of somebody’s misuse of his power.
