Crooks Season 2 Review: Directed by Marvin Kren, the second season of Netflix’s German crime thriller stars Frederick Lau as Charly and Christoph Krutzler as Joseph, alongside Brigitte Kren, Svenja Jung, Jonathan Tittel and others. It has six episodes, each with a runtime of 50 to 60 minutes.
Crooks Season 2 Review
In Netflix’s Crooks season 2, we find Charly still struggling to get away from a life that won’t give him any peace. Charly just wants a peaceful life with Samira and their son, Jonas. However, as expected, Charly’s plan goes wrong right at the start. Once again, Charly finds himself on the hunt for the mysterious Catherine the Great coin, which is at the heart of all the action in this episode. With police breathing down his neck and his family threatened, Charly has no choice but to run and chase after the coins wherever they may be found.
There is a feeling from the very beginning that everything is at stake, and whereas most television shows spend time getting into a rhythm, Netflix’s German crime thriller Crooks season 2 dives right into the action, and does it without overwhelming you. It’s intense, but never overbearing, because there is intention behind each of Charly’s actions, and things only continue to escalate as far as I could tell through the entirety of its six episodes.
Frederick Lau remains at the centre of the show. The depiction of Charly by Frederick Lau is deeper than ever before. There’s a sense of tiredness about him, a kind of exhaustion, not only of the body, but of the soul. He is a person who realises he cannot free himself from a vicious circle, and Lau conveys this struggle quite successfully. You can see how desperate he is to protect his loved ones, no matter how risky this protection can sometimes become.
Joseph, played by Christoph Krutzler, is another excellent performance. The chemistry between him and Charly is quite intense, yet there are times when humour sneaks into their scenes unexpectedly. Joseph is not just a sidekick, but he is very unpredictable, which makes things a little more thrilling for the audience. It seems like their working relationship is put to the test this year.
Samira by Svenja Jung is also emotionally loaded in this series. Her desire to keep away from Charly makes it appear very realistic. This woman doesn’t simply come to help her husband; she tries to ensure that she and her child can have an easier life. It was nice to see that the series actually gave her some agency, instead of making her a background character.

Perhaps one of the best parts about the German series Crooks season 2 is the way it opens up the world. Not only does it leave the original world behind, but it brings in new characters and worlds that add depth and unpredictability to the series. The incorporation of international crime also adds some variation to the series, without feeling out of place at all.
The scenes involving action were another aspect worth mentioning. They weren’t overblown, yet managed to stay thrilling without becoming unrealistic. From meticulously planned thefts to spontaneous acts of violence, the series keeps one tense and on edge through the entire process. It is not uncommon for something bad to happen in such a situation, and it is no different here.
However, the Netflix series Crooks season 2 does not lack for its flaws. At some instances, the overwhelming number of storylines and characters makes the viewing experience a little daunting. In some instances, it is apparent that the show is trying to cover a lot, but in the process, it dilutes the emotionality of some of the scenes.
Yet another small problem is that the motivations for some characters appear rather hasty. Although the fast pace helps maintain the dynamic nature of the series, sometimes it lacks more depth. At times, it would have been great if the program had slowed down its pace a little and delved into some details.
Netflix Crooks Season 2 Review: Summing Up
On the whole, I enjoyed Season 2 of the Crooks series because it is not only an excellent follow-up to the first season but also a more challenging one. It is harder, more daring, and more dramatic than the previous season, though sometimes, it falters from its intensity. It’s not only about running away from the criminals or fighting them; it is about trying to hold on to something dear to oneself despite all the obstacles in life.
