Amor Animal Review: This Argentinian drama on Prime Video was created by Sebastián Ortega and written by Silvina Frejdkes and Alejandro Quesada. The series features Franco Masini, Tatu Glikman, Valentina Zenere, Juan Sorini, Inés Estévez, and others. The show follows the troubled relationship between a poor trap singer named Kaia and Nico, a rich and emotionally disturbed young man.

Amor Animal Review

Prime Video series Amor Animal goes to great lengths to draw you into its chaotic world. There’s action, action plots, and emotionally charged characters who seem to only exist at extreme ends of the spectrum. While it wants to engage you with the level of passion it’s portraying, it quickly becomes tiresome. The show wants to shock you, whether it’s through violence, impulsive relationships, or impulsive decisions, but we’re not given enough to actually care about any of it. It wants to be passionate, but it becomes overwhelming in all the wrong ways.

The story itself is painfully familiar. A poor girl who wants to pursue her dreams meets a rich, troubled boy, and they have a tumultuous, all-consuming relationship. This is a story that’s been done to death, and unfortunately, Argentinian series Amor Animal doesn’t do anything to make it fresh. Rather than adding any layers or complexity to this story, it’s just the same old story with more drama and angst. Never once does it feel like the show is trying to say something meaningful about love, trauma, or social class, it’s just all thrown together to see if it will stick.

Kaia, portrayed by Tatu Glikman, is arguably the most intriguing character in terms of character development. Her desire to make it big as a trap artist and escape her current situation provided a great opportunity for character depth in the narrative. Although Glikman attempts to add authenticity to the character, especially in scenes when she is performing, character development on her end is lacking. For one, her character is quite inconsistent at times, shifting from being focused to being impulsive in frustrating ways.

Franco Masini’s Nico is another character that is written to be the stereotypical “damaged rich boy.” Unfortunately, that’s all he ever feels like in the story. His emotional baggage, especially when it comes to his past and personal tragedy, is brought up but never really delved into to the depth that it should have been. Instead, it is just another plot device to explain his obsessive tendencies. Nico seems more repetitive rather than deep.

The chemistry between Kaia and Nico is intended to be the driving force behind this series, but it is not easy to be invested in this couple. The chemistry between them is immediate, but at the same time, there seems to be a lack of emotional development. One minute they are introduced, and the next, they are already deeply involved with each other. This makes their relationship seem forced rather than organic. The more the series progresses and their relationship becomes more toxic, it becomes more frustrating than interesting. You can’t help but wonder what exactly is holding them together, aside from the chaos and bad decisions.

Another major problem in Prime Video’s Amor Animal is the supporting cast. While characters such as Justina and the so-called “found family” around Nico are introduced as being important to the show, they are still very underdeveloped. They exist more on the background noise than anything else. There is definitely some potential within these characters, especially when it comes to their relationship with privilege and loyalty, which is touched on minimally.

Furthermore, the pacing of the Animal Love series is not helping any of this. The show only has eight episodes, yet somehow, it feels like it’s being dragged out. The scenes are being dragged out longer than they need to be, and a lot of the conflict that’s being shown is repetitive. It’s like the show is just showing the same emotional conflict over and over again without ever really moving forward. Rather, it’s causing fatigue. Once the show hits halfway through, it feels like it’s just stuck in a loop, showing the same patterns over and over again.

The worst part of this, however, is that it feels like it’s trying to deal with certain themes, such as toxic love, trauma, class differences, and ambition, yet it doesn’t commit to any of it. Everything is on the surface level. Arguments are had, decisions are made impulsively, confrontations are had, but none of that has any emotional depth to make any of that impactful. It’s hollow.

The visual side of things does have a certain gritty look to it that suits the tone. The nightlife, the music scene, and the contrast between Kaia’s world and Nico’s privileged world are done well. Again, however, even in this area, things are inconsistent. Some scenes are so darkly lit that it is difficult to keep track of what is going on.

Prime Video Amor Animal Review: Summing Up

Ultimately, though, the Amor Animal series is a show that had all the right ingredients to be something interesting, but just didn’t quite deliver. It confuses passion with narrative, toxicity with depth. It doesn’t make you feel invested in the story; it makes you feel frustrated with the story and the characters. If you’re looking for something meaningful in terms of relationships or characters, there is definitely no need to watch this show.
