Based on the fictional work of Hideo Okuda from 2014 titled Naomi and Kanako, this series stars Jeon So-nee as Cho Eun-su and Lee You-mi as Cho Hui-su, along with Jang Seung-jo, Lee Mu-saeng, Kim Mi-kyung and others. Each episode is approximately an hour long, yet the feelings they evoke are timeless. I experienced as if I was not only viewing a tale but also occupying the suffocating, heart-wrenching universe of these two women.

Korean drama As You Stood By narrates the tale of two inseparable friends, Eun-su and Hui-su, whose lives have been simultaneously marked by abuse in various forms. Hui-su is the one to suffer directly in her marriage, caged with a man who changes her life into a routine consisting of terror and suffering. On the other hand, Eun-su is the one to suffer indirectly, and she has been emotionally traumatised because she lived in a house where her mother was always beaten by her father.
Eun-su was not the one being beaten, though every scream, bruise, and tear was a witness to her, and that left her with unforgotten emotions. Those memories created a silent wrath in her and a strong feeling of guilt for being unable to save her mother. So when she observes the same situation as her best friend, she cannot keep quiet any longer. What ensues is a torturous yet captivating tale of revenge, of despair, and the indestructible friendship of two women who will not let the past repeat itself.
Honestly, I did not anticipate this Netflix series As You Stood By, to impact me this much when I began watching it. Several K-dramas dealing with dark themes have been screened by me, but this was a different case. It neither romanticises agony nor lets torment become the main ingredient of the plot. It presents quiet horror, the type that the majority of people opt to ignore, happening behind the walls. The scenes where Hui-su shrinks from her husband’s steps or conceals her bruises were so real and almost impossible to watch at times. Her suffering made me furious, sorrowful, and powerless, and these were likely the same emotions Eun-su felt throughout the story.
One of the things that really impressed me was the manner in which the series presented silence as violence. There was something wrong with Hui-su, and the people around her, such as her in-law family, her neighbours, and even the police, were all aware of it but turned a blind eye. That specific segment crushed me completely. It brought back to my mind that domestic violence is not only one person’s torture; it is also society’s lack of compassion. This is very much one of the strongest points the drama makes, and I would say that is precisely what makes it memorable.
From the perspective of acting, Lee You-mi has one of her most devastatingly beautiful roles ever. She gives a presentation that is very real and that may be characterised as a combination of great nervousness and little gestures, which reveal all fear, exhaustion, and hope at the same time. The way her voice shakes when she attempts to smile, even though she is feeling the pain, stayed with me throughout the entire time after the episode ended.
In contrast, Jeon So-nee as Eun-su imparts to the audience a very beautiful and quiet strength. She is not shown in the role of a superhero or saviour but as just a friend who refuses to allow another woman to perish in quietude. I found it very interesting how the storyline presented her imperfections. Her decisions are complicated, sometimes even ethically dubious, but that is what makes her so relatable.

Equal recognition is to be shared for direction and cinematography. Every frame feels intentionally built to show emotion, from the dim lights and the creaking doors to Hui-su’s home’s claustrophobic close-ups. Even silence takes the place of a character in this drama. Director Lee Jeong-rim drives the tension so much that a vacant hallway feels menacing. It is the type of production that does not depend on shocking scares but rather on the emotional impact of real life.
One of my favourite things in Netflix’s As You Stood By is its ability to convey darkness, complemented with moments of quiet comfort. The link between Eun-su and Hui-su is not only pain but love, understanding, and the profound bond that women have when they go through the same things – both broken but still choosing to fight. I found myself supporting them not only to live but also to recover. The flashbacks of their younger days with their shared trauma and the way they protect each other create a soul in this K-drama that is revenge over and above.
By the time of the last few episodes, I was drained emotionally yet somehow empowered. This is not only a drama about two women who exact revenge. It is about regaining respect in the eyes of a world that won’t give it up easily. The resolution was painful, and at the same time, he was a little relieved. I guess that is why this Korean drama As You Stood By, is praiseworthy. It is fearless, emotionally sincere, and does not hesitate to reveal the terrible limits that humans can reach when put to the test.
