Money Trap: The Karun Treasure Review: Directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan and Şenol Sönmez, with Erdoğan also starring as the central character, Asım Noyan. The cast includes Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ as Sarı Saruhan, Ezgi Mola as Lerzan Berrak, Demet Akbağ as Nefise, and Bensu Soral Baş as Nazlı, alongside Uraz Kaygılaroğlu, Rıza Kocaoğlu, Ersin Korkut, Okan Çabalar, Atakan Çelik, Şükran Ovalı and Görkem Sevindik. Turkish crime comedy series Organize İşler: Karun Hazinesi has 8 episodes, each lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Money Trap: The Karun Treasure Review

Netflix’s Money Trap: The Karun Treasure revolves around a character by the name of Asım Noyan, a veteran crook, who earns his money through various dishonest ways. Upon discovering a suspicious map related to the famous Karun treasure, Asım does not feel that the map will be very useful to him at first. Nevertheless, the chance of getting rich starts influencing his decisions later on.

Since the casino he usually goes to is taken by Sarı Saruhan, a dangerous criminal requiring Asım to pay back his debts from gambling, the treasure becomes more important for the crook. The protagonist gets back together with his crew to go after the wealth, but Asım does not turn out to be the only one interested in it. In addition to that, Nefise is also looking for the treasure, and various criminals are prepared to sabotage the plan of Asım and his associates.

Netflix series Money Trap: The Karun Treasure was meant to be a success, since its initial concept had great potential to become an amusing crime comedy. A gang of scammers on the hunt for an ancient treasure while getting rid of their own money troubles can only create hilarious situations. Asım already has gambling debts, Saruhan is putting him under pressure, and Nefise has her own motive for getting hold of the map. But it turned out that having a great idea and making a successful show out of it are two separate things, which I noticed while watching the series.

The main issue lies with the comedy. The humour seems to be so artificial at times that I had difficulty getting involved in what was going on. Rather than appearing as individuals who are getting themselves into progressively complicated situations, the characters sometimes seemed like they were just acting out scenes that they are meant to be funny, according to the screenplay. The entire show has a very simple sitcom feel, which appears as though it lacks the laugh track. I kept expecting the humour to happen in an organic way, but many instances appeared awkward rather than humorous.

The setup is one that clearly defines the type of world of crime Asım lives in; with the involvement of a scheme of a house and a police intervention in order to retrieve the treasure map. On the other hand, Saruhan’s actions clearly demonstrate that the financial difficulties Asım faces are something he cannot afford to neglect.

The one very awkward scene is when Saruhan makes Asım read a chicken breast pudding recipe, while another debtor gets locked up in a water tank, which can result in his death by drowning. This is definitely a bizarre combination of threats and ridiculousness, but for me, this scene represents the major flaw of the series. While the series attempts to turn a dangerous situation into humour, the transition does not seem quite natural to me.

Unfortunately, the characters are not as helpful as one might expect from them. Asım is meant to be a professional scoundrel who is capable of dealing with any complications, but all his troubles and bad choices keep leading him into trouble. This contrast would make him an intriguing character. But throughout the Turkish series Money Trap: The Karun Treasure, I did not get the sense that both the actor and other scenes managed to bring out the character. There are definitely times when Yılmaz Erdoğan manages to portray the frustration and scheming of Asım, but still, the whole acting does not look as convincing as I expected it to be.

Lerzan’s participation in Asım’s crimes is yet another example of the opportunity to examine the dynamics between two people who share not only a personal relationship but also a fraudulent one. On the other hand, Saruhan gives the story its menace element, while Nefise’s search for the map is another interest in play. All these characters give direction to the hunt for the treasure, but just because there are many parties involved with different interests does not mean that the story is interesting. I needed the relationships between these people to be conflict-filled and fun. However, the chemistry between them often feels forced.

What really disappointed me is that the Netflix Turkish series Money Trap: The Karun Treasure seems to be more of a substandard product of something that has already been made before. There were moments when the overacting and fake comedy made me think that it is some cheap copy of Kutsal Damaca, lacking any natural entertainment that I expected from such comedy. Given that I already thought that the second sequel was worse than the first one, this series turned out to be even more disappointing.

Netflix Money Trap: The Karun Treasure Review: Summing Up

Overall, the 2026 series Money Trap: The Karun Treasure is an interesting concept, but the script, the flow and the acting fail to create a cohesive whole that would make watching it fun. The treasure hunt provides the characters with motives to conspire against each other, although most of the humour seems awkward and the plot fails to turn the situations into anything funny. I wished I could have chuckled at the plight of Asım and laughed at his absurd exploits as a criminal, but I ended up wishing the scenes would finish just to move on.
