Pooja Meri Jaan Review: Directed by Navjot Gulati and Vipasha Arvind and stars Mrunal Thakur as Pooja, Huma Qureshi as Sana, Vikram Singh Chauhan as Aniket, and Vijay Raaz as Jatin, with Sunita Rajwar and the late Rituraj Singh also appearing in important roles. The ZEE5 film runs for around 1 hour and 57 minutes.

ZEE5’s Pooja Meri Jaan centres around Pooja, an independent young lady who shares a complex relationship with Aniket that eventually takes on a different hue when he decides to turn things around. They have known each other for many years and enjoy an easy relationship, but what she feels about him romantically is not the same. This relationship turns around one night when they participate in a theatre act as a romantic duo. This triggers Aniket to bring up the question of marriage and propose to her, which takes her by surprise. She agrees to accept the ring then, but soon enough, her feelings become known. Later, Aniket commits suicide, and Pooja faces allegations of assisting him in doing so.

Pooja is not portrayed as a typical heroine whose every action needs to be explained to prove that there was a valid reason behind it, which fascinated me at first while watching the ZEE5 film Pooja Meri Jaan. She dates; she breaks up and doesn’t believe that being close to a man means that she should feel obliged to commit romantically. It makes the central conflict more intriguing, as Aniket’s obsession is not based on a simple unrequited love. The movie raises a question of when affection becomes a right, and when rejection turns into responsibility.

ZEE5 movie Pooja Meri Jaan, however, fails to address this question with the level of sophistication I was hoping for. My main concern in this case is that the screenplay raises intriguing questions and then moves away from them before they can be given any significance. In this case, the relationship between Pooja and Aniket should have been the core of the entire narrative, as the audience needs to know how each of them understood their friendship. Sadly, the character of Aniket becomes so unpleasant that the moral dilemma behind his death fades out.

This becomes especially evident through the way the film brings out the more unpleasant aspect of his treatment of Pooja. In any case, even though this revelation definitely altered my perception of the relationship between them, it also makes the story seem overly convenient. Instead of letting me grapple with the idea of whether Pooja, who is completely right in rejecting Aniket’s advances, somehow contributed to creating such unrealistic expectations in him without even realising it, the movie continues to provide me with reasons for taking sides with her. It could have shown how the truth may be both sides of the same coin.

One of the better things about the ZEE5 Pooja Meri Jaan film is Mrunal Thakur. She adds honesty to the plight of Pooja, particularly in situations where Pooja has to contend with claims about her romantic life and the idea that she managed to use Aniket. In many ways, it was easier for me to relate to Pooja’s anger because of Mrunal Thakur’s acting than to some of the lines that had been written for Pooja. On the other hand, it is hard for me not to feel that Pooja could have expressed some of the emotions that she felt rather than being put on the defensive all the time.

For Sana, played by Huma Qureshi, the task is much tougher because the character herself does not seem convincing enough. She is the best friend of Pooja and also a corporate lawyer who takes up her case, yet there is no sufficient effort put in to convince us that she is just the right person to deal with such a complex criminal case. The friendship adds an emotional aspect to the relationship between the two in the court, but it lacks a certain degree of credibility from the legal side of things.

Vijay Raaz as Jatin is enjoyable, and the authority that he projects every time he shows up is appealing to me. His role starts off as that of a judge who is judging Pooja, and this could have made for an interesting contrast between what was going on and what the investigation was revealing. However, like other characters, Jatin becomes more of a screenplay construct than a personality.

Additionally, I believe that the genre flaw in the film is also a contributing factor to its downfall. In different parts of the movie, Pooja Meri Jaan is considered to be a courtroom drama, a story of murder mystery involving Aniket’s death, a movie about stalking and sexual consent, and a movie which talks about the portrayal of women in society. These aspects of the film are not necessarily wrong, but the film is unable to bring these together properly.

However, there are instances where I felt that the movie could have gone on to do something much more intense. For example, the issue of whether or not Pooja was misleading Aniket, if she owed him an explanation, why society judges girls based on the fact that they have dated multiple guys, and if the reason for one’s rejection could justify someone’s behaviour.

ZEE5 Pooja Meri Jaan Review: Summing Up

Overall, the 2026 Pooja Meri Jaan movie is not devoid of a relevant topic and decent actors. The problem with it is that there are a lot of good things that need to be developed consistently. What the film was trying to say was rather interesting, and Mrunal Thakur’s Pooja was vulnerable enough to make me care, but the screenwriting constantly undermines the development of the characters and their conflict. Considering the themes of consent, refusal and judgment, I would have liked to think about the raised issues for a long time. Instead, I was thinking about the missed chances.
