In addition, there were two cases of insurance payments on the deaths. At once, the issue was no longer limited to what happened in Randolph’s Nevada house in 2008. The problem now was whether all these deaths fit into a bigger pattern.
That gradual expansion of the scope of investigation was what made the Netflix documentary The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part the most efficient one. Unlike any other story, there was no need for The Widower to produce some new twist in several minutes, as the case itself already had something unusual about its development. At first, Randolph stated that someone had murdered Sharon, and he had shot Miller out of self-defence. But later investigators managed to prove that the invasion into the house was staged. And once the facts about his previous marriages and wife murders came up, everything changed.
The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part documentary is especially interesting in terms of Dan Slepian’s presence in it. Rather than portraying him only as a journalist who investigated the case, the movie demonstrates how the years-long association between Slepian and Randolph became an integral part of the plot. Slepian had spent many years interviewing the man, trying to figure out who he really was. The scenes that especially capture the attention are those where Randolph feels quite at ease talking about himself despite the nature of the accusations made against him.
It is truly bizarre seeing Randolph talking with Slepian. Randolph’s conduct does not conform to the stereotype of a murder suspect one would normally see in a true crime documentary. His readiness to speak, his confident attitude, and his need for attention give the interviews an uncomfortable feel in a different way altogether. One of the things that has stuck with me is when Randolph asked Slepian if he was beautiful. It is an unusual scene, and it says something about his character without even saying it.
Another strength of the movie is that it gives the viewers a chance to watch the investigation carried out on real evidence and not turn all of the facts into a crime drama. There are no fancy recreations telling the story. Instead, the viewers get a little bit closer to the investigative process thanks to the footage and interviews made by Slepian. Randolph even shows us what happened before the body was found, according to his story. It turns out to be an interesting part since we know for sure how much the police doubted that story.
I also liked the fact that the film does not end with the conviction of Randolph. The criminal history of Randolph is such that this additional background information is required. In 2017, Randolph was convicted and received the death penalty; however, the conviction was overturned, and there was another trial. Again, he was found guilty in 2023 and received 60 years to life in prison in 2024. His conviction was confirmed by the Nevada Supreme Court in August 2026. The inclusion of such background information makes the documentary less like a crime story with a predetermined outcome and more like the history of the struggle for a solution to the case.
In a short time, the 2026 documentary The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part understands the importance of going forward at the right time as well. Much detail exists in this film, from the marriages of Randolph and the suspicious deaths to the killings that occurred in 2008 and the investigation that followed. However, the documentary manages to tie each of the details back to the main question of how the investigators were able to recognise the pattern.

On the whole, The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part is an engrossing and disturbing documentary which realises that the very investigation of the murder can be far more interesting than any kind of artificially created suspense. Director Chris Smith keeps things concise, and the result is a disturbing portrait of a case that becomes more complicated the deeper the investigation goes.
