Dive Into You Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by So Jae-hyun, 너에게 다이브 stars Bona as Yun Ha-na, Park Seo-ham as Jung Woo-jae, Jang Se-hyuk as Yun Ha-ru, Moon Seung-you as CEO Ye-rang, alongside Ha Do-kwon, Park Mi-hyun, Kim Han-yeong, Kang Hyung-suk, Lee Ah-jun and others.
Dive Into You Episode 1 Recap
Dive Into You Episode 1 starts in 2010, where the audience is introduced to Ha-na, who is a little girl purchasing a camcorder to head to a judo competition. Ha-ru, her twin brother, is competing against Woo-jae, who happens to be the person that Ha-na loves. Ha-ru emerges victorious in the competition, and the episode then moves ahead to show just how far he has come in his career as a judoka. Ha-ru has gone on to become an acclaimed judoka and finally wins a gold medal at the Olympics. Ha-na, on the other hand, has opted for a different career altogether and is now an accomplished actress.
Though Ha-na’s life appears glamorous on the surface, she is grappling with an issue that is making her career more challenging than ever. Six months ago, she was diagnosed with emotional numbness, meaning that she could not freely show some of her emotions. The problem is exacerbated when she fails to cry while shooting. Matters become worse when a journalist secretly films her taking drugs while on a plane journey, thus raising online rumours of her using the substances. In the meantime, Woo-jae, who is now serving as Ha-ru’s security guard, discovers a sinister threat involving a teddy bear with its eyes torn out and a message that Ha-na cannot cry.
All of this happens in spite of everything that is going on around her; Ha-na goes to the award ceremony and wins the Best Actress award. Instead of avoiding the issue, Ha-na makes a statement about her medication use and says that she is having difficulties. This is one of the few occasions when Ha-na shows that there is a person under the actress. However, the threat to Ha-na is far more dangerous than this media scandal; a man with a scar on his hand enters the building pretending to be a flower seller.
This becomes very tragic as Ha-na gets attacked by the stalker, who is stopped from attacking Ha-na by Woo-jae, who gets stabbed several times and eventually dies due to his injuries. Ha-na begins to cry, which makes the whole event even more tragic for all the reasons mentioned previously regarding how Ha-na was unable to express emotions. However, the danger doesn’t end there as the attacker tries to push the car of the twins into the water from the bridge.
The major twist appears when Ha-na looks into the camcorder. It is not only that she sees the footage but also gets transferred to the year 2010. In particular, Ha-na is in Ha-ru’s body participating in the judo match at the very beginning of the episode. When she sees that Woo-jae is alive, her whole situation changes, and at the end of episode 1 of Dive Into You, she runs towards him and hugs him. The younger Ha-na looks at what is happening in bewilderment. All of a sudden, her dream is no longer impossible.
Dive Into You Episode 2 Recap
In Episode 2 of Dive Into You, Ha-na and Ha-ru attempt to comprehend the events that occurred during their experience. Initially, they thought that the two of them were dreaming about something weird, but the alterations that take place in their environment make them believe otherwise. The medals that were once golden are silver now, while recordings from the camcorder have been either altered or deleted completely.
Through experiments with this peculiar occurrence, the twins find out that the camcorder and water have something to do with their time-travelling powers. They finally come back to December 31, 2010, when they were in high school. Most importantly, Woo-jae is still alive. It is difficult for Ha-na to see him again, and she gets so worried about his well-being that he starts to get suspicious right away. She needs to remind herself that she is now physically young and can’t say everything she knows about the future.
Then comes their attention to the incident that possibly altered the future of Woo-jae: his shoulder injury. It is clear to them that he sustained an injury prior to a very crucial match where the national team would be selected; however, they do not know exactly how the incident took place. Their search leads them to a judo training camp where there are several chances for Ha-na to observe Woo-jae. There are some funny moments too, since Ha-ru introduces her to the other competitors humorously.
Additionally, Dive Into You Episode 2 shows that there are other serious issues facing Woo-jae besides his judo. First, his father comes to the training centre and shows clearly that he is only interested in making money rather than supporting his son. The debts of Woo-jae’s father are another issue because people start seeing Woo-jae as a way of getting money from his judo career. This happens when some people start threatening Woo-jae and those who surround him. Ha-na and Ha-ru get involved in this process and later, Ha-na helps Woo-jae to leave this situation and then helps Woo-jae to feel less ashamed of himself.
However, there are also repercussions that accompany altering the past. The following day, Woo-jae disappears, quits judo and keeps his deposit. Consequently, the twins find themselves back in the present, only to realise that some of the future has been altered by their interventions. Some people who were supposed to recognise Woo-jae no longer do so. In addition, the twins come to learn that every change that they make is accompanied by unpredictable ramifications. As Ha-na realises that the awards ceremony is coming up, she chooses to confront it, as this will give her a chance to prevent the murderer of Woo-jae from succeeding.
Dive Into You Episode 1-2 Review
While the Dive Into You Kdrama ep 1 may have used too much time in setting up the premise of time travel, the series instead decides to have Woo-jae’s death serve as the emotional turning point. The effectiveness of Ha-na’s response comes in the drama establishing her emotional numbness and then having her experience something strong enough to make her breakthrough from her numbed state. The contrast between her failing to cry and crying after Woo-jae’s death is effective in this regard.
Bona, aka Kim Ji-yeon, is very credible in the role of Ha-na due to the fact that she is a very complex character from the very beginning of the drama. She is well-controlled, cautious, and used to managing her emotions. But once she gets a second chance to meet Woo-jae, she reveals a completely new side of herself, which is vulnerable. Another thing worth noticing is the excellent performance of Park Seo-ham, who is very charming in the role of Woo-jae thanks to his silent closeness to Ha-na. It is their history and little gestures that show us why Ha-na risks altering the timeline for him.
The twin friendship between Ha-na and Ha-ru was another point that made me love the series. Ha-ru gets a comedic side thanks to the work of Jang Se-hyuk, but beneath the jokes lies true affection. The twins’ body swapping can be just another comedic aspect in the drama, but these episodes manage to use the premise to portray the closeness of the twins while at the same time showing their different lives through the other person.
Moon Seung-you’s Ye-rang also brought another element to the story, allowing us to see Ha-ru’s life outside judo and his connection with Ha-na. Kdrama Dive Into You ep 2 also added to Woo-jae’s character development without basing him solely on his role as Ha-na’s first love.
In my view, the most remarkable aspect of these first episodes is the perfect blend of drama and fun elements. The narrative can go from the sad death of Woo-jae to the twins trying to figure out their weird laws for time travelling and then into the fun parts set during the judo camp while retaining its emotional side. There are still some things that confuse me, such as the identity of the stalker and the way the timeline changes. Furthermore, I am interested in finding out if the body swap will play an even greater role in the narrative as opposed to simply being a fun element of the premise.
Dive Into You Review: Summing Up
Overall, the first two episodes of the Korean drama Dive Into You are quite amazing. Now we have learned that saving Woo-jae will not be as simple as just travelling back in time to the day he died. It looks like every attempt to manipulate the past might result in a completely different future, and the disappearance of Woo-jae makes us realise that Ha-na and Ha-ru do not know the results of their actions. With the coming of the awards ceremony when Ha-na knows everything about how things went down last time, I would like to see whether she can succeed in her mission.
