Jagamae Sangeetham Review: Directed by Palnati Surya Pratap, the Prime Video Telugu series stars Prakash Raj as Vedantham Shankara Shastri, Akshay Lagusani as Balamurali Krishna aka Balu, Sushmita Shetty as Pallavi and Meka Srikanth as Thyagaraju, along with Shiju, Madhubala, Prachi Thaker and others. The series has eight episodes, each with a runtime of 35 minutes.
Jagamae Sangeetham Review
Prime Video’s Jagamae Sangeetham is centred on Balu, who has been brought up admiring his grandpa Shastri, a revered Carnatic Musician who has led a life dedicated completely to music and never treats music as a commodity for business. Balu aspires to be his heir and attain the Sangeetha Bharathi title; however, his meticulously planned life becomes disrupted due to his meeting Pallavi, a pop singer who takes an approach which contrasts sharply with Balu’s. As opposed to Balu’s responsibility to continue the musical tradition set by his grandpa, Pallavi is looking to create popular music and reach out to the masses.
This makes Balu wonder about where his own artistic identity stands. At the same time, the complications in his impoverished family life and the appearance of Thyagaraju – another singer – complicate the situation even further. The aspect that I liked most about the Prime Video Telugu series Jagamae Sangeetham was that the main conflict in the story was simple, yet at the same time not entirely black-and-white. Shastri is genuinely convinced that what he does is right and necessary because he protects something precious.
His decision not to commercialise Carnatic music is not an example of ridiculousness and obsession of an old-fashioned person but his sincere love of the art itself. Unfortunately, the same approach applies to the treatment of the people surrounding Shastri, who are expected to follow the set of his standards even if they suffer from poverty because of it.
This is where Prakash Raj does an especially good job for me. The way that he portrays Shastri is such that his mere presence is intimidating regardless of whether or not he says much. I was able to appreciate the reason why the family respected him, yet at the same time was curious about the lack of people who dared to challenge him. The role that he plays turns out to be one of the best motivations for keeping up with the show.
However, Balu was someone in whom I had some conflicting emotions. His role in the show demanded that he become the emotional focal point of the show because he is always being tugged in various directions. He has to please his grandfather, help his poor family, fall for Pallavi, and at the same time, he must contend with the issue of musical inheritance. There is more than enough in this list to create an interesting coming-of-age journey. It was a great notion to see a character who spends his whole life trying to prove himself worthy of somebody’s legacy figure out what he really wanted for himself.
Balu’s transformation is not entirely as effective as it could have been since there are times when the transformation is not always convincing enough, as Balu is busy trying to please everybody who is near him, be it Shastri, Pallavi, or even his own family. Even when it gets beyond ridiculous for him, he still stretches himself instead of making decisions that help him define his personality. This is what makes Balu’s problems seem repetitive in terms of their emotions instead of evolving.
Pallavi is much more compelling because she embodies the opposing stance in this musical conflict. Her motivations are not based on keeping the past alive; she is looking to make something of herself by making a hit and then joining her musical idol Queen Ellie on stage. The motivation gives her story a much-needed boost, especially when she convinces Balu to come out of his shell.
Pallavi’s own journey does provide her some space for self-realisation, though I found that her dreams could have been further elaborated on in the series. Sushmita Shetty is earnest in portraying Pallavi, especially during the times when her confidence clashes with the outcomes of her decisions. Yet at times, her emotions become too repetitive, thus somewhat reducing the impact of the latter part of her storyline.
The family narrative has some quite compelling content in it, especially considering the actions of Balu’s parents and the effects on finances following Shastri’s decisions. The way that Shastri is kept in the dark about the true condition of his family financially is another dimension to the seemingly noble philosophy of the patriarch. The family is essentially footing the bill for principles that they were not even party to choosing. The depiction of Balu’s mother sheds light on the gender inequality at home, although I wasn’t entirely convinced of how cleanly the show pulled off this element.
One problem with the Prime Video series Jagamae Sangeetham that I am having is that it tries to juggle too many things. Besides Balu’s and Pallavi’s affair, there is also the problem of the family’s monetary troubles, the theme of arranged marriage in Sandhya’s case, the contest with the status quo in Thyagaraju’s case, and the relationship of Shastri with his family and Pallavi’s ambition.
However, music is also an important element of this Telugu series Jagamae Sangeetham, and the compositions of Vishal Chandrashekhar fit well into the Carnatic music background of the serial. But I don’t think that the music helps lift the story to the heights that it should be lifted to. The fact is that the music is the medium of communication in this serial.
Prime Video Jagamae Sangeetham Review: Summing Up
In all, Jagamae Sangeetham is a decent series hidden within this series, especially in the rivalry between Shastri’s inflexible traditionalism and Balu’s search for an identity. Prakash Raj does well here, and Pallavi has a strong characterisation because of the performance of Sushmita Shetty. The Carnatic background adds colour and culture to the plot. Nevertheless, there are some aspects like weak characterisation, a too-heavy subplot structure and sometimes a lack of emotional appeal that keep this series from becoming a great musical one.
