Beauty in Black Season 3 Review: Directed by Tyler Perry and starring Taylor Polidore Williams as Kimmie, Crystle Stewart as Mallory, Amber Reign Smith as Rain, Xavier Smalls as Angel, Julian Horton as Roy, Steven G. Beauty in Black Season 3 Review
Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black Season 3, the Bellarie family is in hot water since Norman, Jules, Roy and Olivia have been arrested, whereas Charles manages to escape from being arrested. In the meantime, Rain takes control of the club and instantly starts acting like a person who finally got what he wanted. Kimmie still finds herself in between people and the growing danger she is getting involved in. The interaction of Charles and Varney turns out to be one of the most emotional subplots in the season, especially taking into consideration the way Charles suffers from the pressure of his family and the bodies that are buried.
There is also Horace, whose cruel character turns even crueller after he realises that someone has purposefully injected cancer cells into him. After that, the race between revenge, blackmail, murder and survival begins. The main thing which I dislike about the Netflix series Beauty in Black Season 3 is the sense that the storyline is always trying to beat its own previous performance, rather than exploring the implications of the past events in depth. Nevertheless, there are quite intriguing themes presented here.
For example, Norman’s ability to blackmail the police and the judges, as well as many other public figures, due to the information he got from them is a very interesting topic which could have been explored much deeper and revealed the real extent to which corruption has penetrated into city life. Norman’s manipulation of people through such situations where underage girls were involved provides some reasons for the fact that this man never gets punished for his actions.
It was in the execution of the story where I had problems. Norman escapes from prison, challenges Mallory and is shot but lives to shoot Horace. So many turns occur that at some point, the twists ceased to surprise me. This also occurred with regard to Charles and Horace. At first, it seems that Charles shoots his father, but in an instant it is revealed that it did not happen at all. It does not make one feel excited for the next twist to come; rather, it makes the story manipulative.
Charles, in fact, is one of the characters I have felt the most for in Netflix’s Beauty in Black 3. The dynamics between Charles and Varney allow the series to take its time and delve into some emotions in between all the violence. It is obvious that Charles has had a bad upbringing within his family, especially from his brother Horace, and his problems with his own mental health eventually lead him to go through rehab. Varney was right to stand by Charles’ side and help him out instead of leaving him in the chaos. Charles and Varney’s farewell before he goes to rehab was definitely one of the more emotional scenes that worked for me.
In the case of Horace, on the other hand, defending him becomes nearly impossible. While it can be understood that Horace is supposed to be ruthless, what happens in Netflix’s Beauty in Black Season 3 turns him into such a villain that some of his scenes are hard to take in all seriousness. What makes him particularly unpleasant is his reaction to Charles’s suicide attempt by Charles, and it becomes evident just how toxic Horace’s vision of a perfect family is for both himself and Charles because of the way he treats Varney and Charles.
It is intriguing to watch how Charles comes to realise that his father’s approval does not mean much to him anymore, but it is done in such a sensational way that it somewhat spoils the effect. In addition, the character development of Rain has also been disappointing to me. She is supposed to go through a major change because now she has power over the club, but instead, she gets addicted to the power that she has. She starts spending money, threatening her employees and sees Sylvie as an obstacle to get rid of.
I could see what they were trying to achieve with her character this season, as Rain is starting to become one of those people whom she once had to survive with. Nevertheless, I wished for more internal conflicts within her. It seems that Kimmie is the only one who still retains some semblance of recognition of the fact that those around her are pushing it too far.
Her worries about Horace, helping out Mallory as Norman bleeds to death, and trying to save Sylvie from becoming another victim of the game indicate that Kimmie has not yet become one of the inhabitants of this world, but her story ends up being overshadowed by the endless escalation of the season as well.
At other times, the violence gets so over the top that it begins to work against the drama. Bodies, shooting, blackmail, a wood chipper, attempted suicide, and an attack on the club come one after another in quick succession. In particular, the Season 3 finale is very violent, with Horace and Norman shooting each other and with Jules betraying Paul, before attacking Frank and Sylvie. Of course, the cliffhanger with Jules, Rain, Gina and the club was supposed to make me seek the answer, but at that point I was tired of all the violence.
In many instances, the performances are better than the writing. Taylor Polidore Williams imbues Kimmie with a groundedness which works whenever the context of the story gets too crazy. Steven G. Norfleet adds vulnerability to Charles, especially during those moments where Charles must face up to how his family has messed him up. Varney by Terrell Carter is also excellent against him since he adds that element of tenderness in an environment which is highly antagonistic.
In essence, my feeling after watching Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black 3 was frustration rather than enjoyment. Underneath the madness, there is a lot that would be interesting for fans to know, for example, the rivalry between Charles and Varney, Kimmie’s fight to maintain her humanity, and the growing feud between Norman and Horace. However, the season continues to cover these aspects with surprises and violence.
Netflix Beauty in Black Season 3 Review: Summing Up
Overall, for me personally, Season 3 of Beauty in Black was kind of a mixed bag. I never found it completely boring due to the constant action going on; however, constant action does not mean good storytelling. What I was hoping to see was the decisions of the characters actually mattering and the consequences of them actually sticking around. There is enough going on here to push the story forward, but as an individual season, this one seems much more focused on shocking me than making me care about the next thing that will happen.
