Love In Sync Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Kim Chil-bong, the Korean drama 공감세포 stars Kim Myung-soo, aka L as Cha Eun-hwan, Kang Min-ah as Yu Ji-an, alongside Kwon So-hyun, Shin Woo-gyum, Cha Min-ji, Kang Pil-jun and others. The first two episodes merge elements of romance, healing, and fantasy to set the scene for an interesting relationship and delve into the dark side of the entertainment industry, past traumas, and the price of fame.

Love In Sync Episode 1 Recap

Love In Sync Episode 1 begins at the prestigious Korea Film Awards, where the media is all over the intense competition between Yu Ji-an and Han Yi-jin, two actresses who are just getting started. Even before the event takes place, the audience is already made aware of the fact that Ji-an is a woman who obsesses about her appearance and perfectionism, which means that she is always thinking about how she looks. Her main goal in life is to stay perfect at all times.

Next, the drama presents psychiatrist Cha Eun-hwan, whose method of treatment quickly makes him unique. Instead of dispensing conventional advice, he advises one of his young patients to face difficult feelings rather than suppress them. Though he enjoys professional respect, he shuns publicity and likes keeping himself out of the spotlight. A mere glimpse of one of Ji-an’s advertisements suggests that there may actually be something between the two strangers.

On the other hand, Ji-an causes unwanted controversy before the award ceremony, once she finds out that she will walk on the red carpet, trailing her main competitor. Determined to regain the media spotlight, she causes an accident to hold up her entry so that all eyes are on her instead. Her trick proves successful in gaining public attention; however, the tension between her and Yi-jin increases even further when they step into the award ceremony. Behind their smiling faces is a history of grievances from their time as rivals in the idol world. As Yi-jin is awarded the Best New Actress, Ji-an is crushed.

At home, all of Ji-an’s confidence disappears. She has a real talk with her boss where she asks him to critique her acting abilities, only to get a scolding she has never wished for before. Through flashbacks, we see how Ji-an’s strict mother brought her up believing that kindness is a vulnerability and winning is more important than true connections.

Facing another challenging role in her career, the agency recommends counselling in order to help Ji-an improve her emotions on screen. Reluctant at first but realising that her friend Yi-jin had also attended sessions, she finally makes the decision to visit the clinic of Dr Eun-hwan for her very first session. But their initial conversation is rather awkward because he studies her personality and hidden fears. They are abruptly cut off from finishing their session as there is an outage of electricity, locking them inside. This makes her relive her past traumas and leaves her afraid of her own feelings. At the end of Episode 1 of Love In Sync, Eun-hwan rescue her from the locked room.

Love In Sync Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of In Love In Sync, events begin where the scary experience ends, with Ji-an now lying in a hospital bed. While the agency is preparing to make Eun-hwan responsible for the scary experience, Ji-an surprisingly does not want to blame him for that experience. Something much more confusing happens, though; she suddenly begins to hear parts of Eun-hwan’s thoughts. She has no idea why such an odd connection has developed between her and Eun-hwan, which makes her more and more confused.

But when Ji-an is back at work, she tries her best to earn a major part in a film being made by renowned filmmaker Moon. But soon enough, things get out of hand as the director does not hesitate to insult Ji-an for her poor acting and knowledge of films. Finally, she is unable to contain herself any longer and challenges him and walks away from there. But surprisingly enough, her honesty makes quite an impression, and she gets selected for the film nonetheless.

Even though Ji-an’s career seems to revive for a moment, Eun-hwan experiences his own problems. One of his previous patients gets entangled in some kind of crime, leading to the media doubting his unorthodox treatment approaches. In no time at all, he turns from being a reputable psychiatrist into a person under attack by both the media and the police. On the other hand, in Love In Sync Episode 2, Ji-an also experiences her own share of troubles when the old rumours about her bullying start to resurface on the internet.

As the professional world of both characters deteriorates, the plot now moves towards highlighting the impact of failure from an emotional perspective. Ji-an finds herself alone in the sense that she no longer has anyone backing her. She even finds out that her agency’s renewed contract is extremely biased in favour of the company, providing her with no sort of guarantee at all. Unable to bear such discrimination, she rips up the contract and leaves, only to discover that practically no one is prepared to back her in the industry. Even finding a place to stay becomes difficult after she gets swindled by a landlord.

Ji-an goes to the police station towards the end of Love In Sync kdrama episode 2 to report the fraud case; she encounters Eun-hwan in the most unlikely place, and he assists her when she needs someone to lean on without exposing her to the media, which is keen on taking her photos. Ji-an gets to listen to him talk inside her mind once again, and she is amazed at how much he cares about her. She stumbles on the streets, and she ends up breaking down and letting out all that she had been going through all along.

Love In Sync Episode 1-2 Review

Interestingly enough, the first two episodes of Love In Sync are more inclined toward emotional recovery than love. Although the plotline regarding Ji-an being able to hear Eun-hwan’s thoughts is brought up early in the drama, it is nice to see that it is not immediately made the focal point. Rather, it is emphasised that both Ji-an and Eun-hwan are flawed people with emotional issues from their respective pasts. This can be effective at times, even though there were moments when the episodes dragged unnecessarily.

What I liked most about this Love In Sync Korean drama is that it portrays Yu Ji-an as a flawed heroine. She is a self-centred, insecure, competitive woman who always makes bad decisions, but each aspect of her personality has developed through years of being pressured by the industry and her mother. Kang Min-ah succeeds in playing the contrast between Ji-an’s haughty public persona and the vulnerable side she lets out when no one is around to see it.

Kim Myung-soo (L) also plays a good role as Cha Eun-hwan with his cool and comforting performance. Instead of showing him as a saint, this drama has made him more realistic as a person who has problems just like Ji-an. These scenes between Ji-an and Eun-hwan have turned out to be the best part of these early episodes since there is an existing emotional connection between them even before anything romantic happens.

Kwon So-hyun’s Han Yi-jin isn’t only portrayed as an envious competitor. It is clear enough that there must be many things beyond the complicated relationship that she shares with Ji-an, and I want to know what really transpired between them when they were idols together. Also, the presence of the staff members, the manager and CEO of Ji-an makes the entertainment industry realistic by illustrating how fast the loyalty vanishes with the end of success. Even the story of Eun-hwan with his past patient contributes another dramatic conflict apart from the romantic one.

With all that being said, the first two episodes of Love In Sync kdrama are not perfect either. There are career problems of Ji-an and Eun-hwan, as well as issues of bullying, psychological damage and fantasy. At some points, it seems like the drama tries to cover too much before it gets the chance to get the viewers into everything. Also, I think that the whole idea of fantasy could be described a bit better than it was. Nevertheless, the main advantage of these two episodes is definitely their chemistry and enigmatic bond.

Love In Sync Review: Summing Up

In all, Love In Sync Episodes 1 and 2 give me a cautiously positive impression of interest without leaving me totally enthralled. There have been enough emotional tensions created along with interesting characterisations and unresolved issues within the plot for me to want to see what comes next in terms of story development, but at the same time, the drama has to work on finding a better balance among its elements of fantasy, romance, and psychology. Having both Ji-an and Eun-hwan stripped of almost everything by now, they are left in an ideal position to heal one another.
