Gangs of Galicia Season 2 Review
Taking place three years after the end of the previous one, Netflix’s Gangs of Galicia Season 2 tells the story of Ana and Daniel, who are now found in opposing camps of an expanding and constantly evolving drug cartel. While Ana is forced to return to Cambados, dealing with the demons from her past and working against the Padíns, who happen to be her relatives, Daniel finds himself entangled in a single last job for his father’s crime organisation. With the police getting closer and new factions rising, both our protagonists have no other choice but to make tough decisions.
What first attracted me to season 2 of the Spanish series Gangs of Galicia was the drama that drives the entire show forward. Ana and Daniel aren’t just lovers struggling for survival anymore; rather, they are people who have to deal with the repercussions of all that they have done. It feels as though there’s a lot at stake in their actions this time, not only themselves but an entire family depending on them. And to be honest, they do a pretty good job of showing that.
This, however, is where the issue lies. Season 2 of Gangs of Galicia has become overcrowded with subplots, rivalries, treacheries, and even internal conflicts, leaving the viewer breathless as they try to keep track of everything happening. Each episode comes with something new, and the plot only thickens, but without enough space to let it settle. Rather than creating suspense, it leaves you wondering and confused about what is going on and who is playing tricks on whom.
The relationships within the Padín clan were supposed to be among the most engaging elements of the series. There is definitely an upheaval in the order of things, since the younger generation takes over from the elders and becomes much more aggressive. The dilemma in Daniel’s mind of whether he stays loyal to his clan or decides to lead a normal life was a very engaging idea on paper. However, it does not work all the time due to the quick changes in events.
But Ana’s character arc, in particular, was one that could have been very promising. The way she returned to Cambados, the choice she made to get involved in the criminal scene, and all the events that occurred from that point forward could have been the beginning of her growth as a character. There were definitely times when Clara Lago was outstanding in her portrayal of Ana and her emotional state, but once again, the writing wasn’t consistent.
As Daniel, Tamar Novas does what he can with what he is given, but at least his portrayal was more realistic than the others involved in the ensuing mayhem. The desperation and subtle frustration of his character are evident in most of the scenes, particularly when he is put under pressure to make hard decisions. Even his storyline seems to be drawn too thinly because of the cluttered plot.
Moreover, at certain moments, there is unnecessary melodramatic dragging because there is an unnecessary focus on emotionally charged moments that lack credibility. In the next instant, there is a very fast development of the plot, making the viewers feel like it’s rushing to compensate for the time lost earlier.
The criminal elements, which ought to be the focus, are strangely anticlimactic. Intrigue can be seen from time to time, especially in terms of political machinations and betrayal, but they get lost amid a labyrinth of storytelling. It is a high-stakes situation, but the storytelling does not necessarily reflect this.
But that doesn’t mean there’s no hope for this Spanish series Gangs of Galicia Season 2. At times, the show works quite well, delivering emotional exchanges that ring true, and the premise of two individuals attempting to extricate themselves from a situation that continues to drag them down is a powerful one. However, when the show prioritises its characters above its audacious plot, it proves to be fascinating.

Of course, it is not completely unwatchable, particularly if you are like me, who has invested in watching the first season, but the disorganised, messy feel of this season cannot be completely overlooked. Indeed, by the end of this season, it was clear that it was nothing short of an effort to sort out the chaotic nature of this show, and, although I will refrain from elaborating, the lack of any real answers was more frustrating than satisfying.
