Undercover Miss Hong Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Park Seon-ho and written by Moon Hyun-kyung, 언더커버 미쓰홍 is a new Korean drama blending corporate intrigue with undercover suspense and character-driven drama. The series stars Park Shin-hye in a dual role as Hong Geum-bo and her undercover identity, Hong Jang-mi, alongside Go Kyung-pyo as Sin Jeon-u. Supporting the narrative are Ha Yoon-kyung as Ko Bok-hui and Cho Han-gyeol as Albert O, with strong performances from veterans like Lee Deok-hwa and Kim Hyung-mook. As the story unfolds, the audience is taken to the 1990s when the world of power, money, and purity was full of vices, and it was a woman who daintily graced the centre of it all.

Episode 1 of Undercover Miss Hong starts off by unmistakably marking time in the 1990s, a decade of rapid financial growth and equally rapid corruption. Hong Geum-bo is presented as a leading investigator at the Financial Supervisory Service, a person who boasts of being ahead of his time. Her first important entry has already set up the scene: she fakes a bribe at a hostess bar, but in a court trial, unremittingly dismantles the offenders by bringing their stock manipulation scheme to light with unassailable evidence.
Her skill gets her the promotion to manager of the team, but at the same time, it creates instant opposition. The male coworkers who are under her say they will leave the company by submitting group resignation letters, clearly showing they are not ready to work with a female boss. Geum-bo does not wait for a second; she rips their resignations to shreds and declares her power. She soon tells the world who her next target is: Hanmin Investment and Securities, a strong company suspected of running a gigantic slush fund.
The situation turns more engaging for one when an anonymous informant nicknamed “Yehppee” gets in touch with Geum-bo and offers her access to vital accounting records. After their rendezvous, Yehppee is revealed to be Myeong-hwi, the firstborn son of the chairman of Hanmin. He trusts Geum-bo is the one investigator who will not suppress the truth and gives her papers that might trigger a full-blown investigation. Little does he know that his aide Ko Bok-hui has detected his odd behaviour and inadvertently starts a series of deadly repercussions.
A dark event occurs in the Undercover Miss Hong episode 1 when Myeong-hwi fakes his death in a car accident; later, it is hinted that he died due to the approval of his family so that Hanmin could be protected. The investigation gets interrupted, Geum-bo loses her position, and her reputation is destroyed right in her department. After an attempted kidnapping, she gets her last chance: she has to go undercover as a 20-year-old in Hanmin. Initially, Geum-bo is reluctant to take up the challenge, but later on, she agrees with the determination to find the slush fund and meet Yehppee in three months.

Undercover Miss Hong episode 2 casts an illuminating light not only on Geum-bo’s but also on the whole family’s change as they all lose, small by small, the different ways and means they have identified and associated with her. Besides, she looks heavy about the coming official changes at her workplace. The latest changes are not to her liking as she has already lost the emotion from time to time to her co-workers, and she still fears it will prove to be hard when it comes to letting down her guard around her emotions.

The hostel now becomes a crucible of characters, and Eun-jo, the granddaughter of Han-Min corporation and chairman Kang Pil-beom, who will be working with Jang-mi in the risk management group. She quickly makes friends with Bang Jin-mok, Lee Yong-gi, and Albert, who are her colleagues at work, all sprinting in different directions while still pretending to be a part of the conversation. Jang-mi grabs the opportunity presented by the age gap and her kind nature to infiltrate the office and win the sympathy of the rest.
Tension escalates when Bok-hui is given the news that a new executive has been appointed and she may lose her job as a result of the pending shift in leadership. The situation is made worse when it is later revealed that Sin Jeon-u, Geum-bo’s former lover from more than ten years ago, is the new executive. Geum-bo knows that Jeon-u will recognise her immediately, so she arranges it that Bok-hui is coached by her to hold on to her position, thus giving Geum-bo both the security and the flow of information that she needs from inside.
The last moments of the episode see the stakes raised dramatically. Bok-hui finds a concealed book of accounts, which gives a strong indication that she could be Yehppee herself. At the same time, Geum-bo is caught when someone sees her entering the office at night and leading the way to Jeon-u, who straight away points out an aspect of her that is familiar to him. The encounter is cut short, and at the end of episode 2 of Undercover Miss Hong, viewers are left hanging as the next event is certainly going to be a big showdown of Geum-bo’s undercover mission.

What if a financial investigator with strong morals, who never gives in, is caught in her own trap and has to swap places with another person in order to bring the truth out? Undercover Miss Hong kdrama starts with a bold and fashionable concept that instantly distinguishes it from the common office dramas. With Park Shin-hye’s great performance, the series matches the corporate corruption with the undercover tension in a way that is at once sharp, controlled, and surprisingly emotional from the very start.
Episodes 1 and 2 of Undercover Miss Hong are successful mainly because of their slow approach to building the stakes. Instead of quickly getting into the undercover setup, the drama lets us witness the fall of Hong Geum-bo professionally, from a respected investigator to a silenced scapegoat. This grounding makes her choice of going undercover feel justified rather than gimmicky. The writers do a great job in portraying how isolating it is to keep the law on your side if power decides otherwise, and that feeling of quiet injustice is always present in every interaction.
As soon as Geum-bo becomes her youthful counterpart, the series changes its pace but still keeps the heaviness throughout the plot. The interactions at the hostel, the hierarchy at work and the little mind games in Hanmin are unfolding more of the narrative, particularly through students like Bok-hui, who is very interesting due to her mix of fragility and enigma. The coming back of Sin Jeon-u brings about emotional tension which is not purely dependent on nostalgia; rather, it risks at any moment, Geum-bo’s cleverly designed disguise being dismantled.
What absolutely boosts the show Miss Hong to the skies of greatness is its self-control. The show does not overdo the comedic and the romantic elements; it allows the discomfort, the mistrust and the moral vagueness to be the leading forces of the story. Undercover Miss Hong episodes 1 and 2, in the rolling quiet before the storm, the loudness through the visual and tonal styles seems to be quite steady and calm; they are very slow and eerily intense.
The hope that Geum-bo’s ruling can hold for one more moment before the truth takes its toll is the temptation that the show offers the audience, with the already ongoing cracking of the secrets and friendships that are about to explode.
