100 Days of Deception Episode 3 Recap

100 Days of Deception Episode 3 starts off with Ga-gyeong and the owner of the pawnshop trying to fool Tae-woong about the lost wallet. Unfortunately, things do not really go the way they were supposed to because, shortly after the Japanese troops arrive at the scene to conduct some searches. Tae-woong explains to the soldiers that he is connected with the Government-General, which means that Shinichi’s power enables him to stop the interrogation. They are actually looking for the members of Gugukdan, the resistance movement that has been harassing Shinichi’s father.

Meanwhile, a dubious person is taken for interrogation, but Fukuda does not heed Tae-woong’s warning that this person does not resemble the killer’s description. However, once a chance comes, he lets the person go, thus demonstrating another aspect of his personality. Meanwhile, Ga-gyeong uses Tae-woong’s preoccupation with the interrogation to escape while switching clothes with another visitor.

At the same time, Shinichi makes plans to destroy the resistance movement. After discussing things with the Chief of Police, he makes him a proposition – he would give him a chance of getting promoted in exchange for the destruction of the Gugukdan. But the resistance also has some plans of their own. With the promotion of Tae-woong, So-ran and the other members of the resistance believe that it would be a good idea to get an informant into the Government-General.

Their best choice for that would be Ga-gyeong, who was very skilled with languages and also moved around without notice. Philip agreed that she would be helpful, but there was just one big problem – Ga-gyeong did not have much desire to participate in the fight for the freedom of Korea. All she cared about was earning enough money to leave Joseon and settle in America. However, before Ga-gyeong can accept his offer, she comes back home to see Kkot-nim and No-ma in distress outside.

When she goes inside, she sees Ma Mun-mak with the money that she had been hiding, accusing her of keeping it and running away from him without paying him back his money. In addition, he abuses her verbally and physically while telling her about her mother and how she had an affair with a Japanese man. However, the situation becomes more sorrowful when the flashbacks show Ga-gyeong why she behaves as she does. Ga-gyeong has been trying to protect herself all these years from people who were willing to take advantage of her and hurt her, which includes a man she had killed because he tried to rape her.

After the exchange, Ga-gyeong decides to become part of the resistance, yet with certain terms on her side. First, she wants to receive more money, free meals and lodging at So-ran’s place, and a guarantee that she will be with the resistance only for three months. She receives all the terms, however, she is warned not to steal from the members of the resistance, to not betray them and to not ask unnecessary questions.

So-ran also tells Ga-gyeong about Tae-woong’s history, which shows that he is Korean, born in Korea, but adopted by Shinichi at the age of twelve. His position in the colonial government makes him quite a significant person, and Ga-gyeong is told to be careful in regard to him. Philip visits Shinichi and offers his services to improve the reputation of Japan in front of the League of Nations Commission, as well as Ga-gyeong as an interpreter.

The assignment of Ga-gyeong immediately becomes complicated. Tae-woong seems to suspect why Ga-gyeong suddenly became his secretary, which forces her to use an emergency trick, pretending to be really in love with him. Discussions between them make the situation more humorous, especially those where Tae-woong shows Ga-gyeong around the Government-General impatiently.

On the other hand, Ga-gyeong has a particular goal that she hopes to achieve in the process: she has to get hold of Shinichi’s schedule. Eventually, she manages to hack into Tae-woong’s desk, copies the file, and hands over the information to her contact. Before she can revel in the success of her endeavour, however, she is accused of being a spy and a bag is put over her head by the end of Episode 3 of 100 Days of Deception.

100 Days of Deception Episode 4 Recap

In episode 4 of 100 Days of Deception, we find Ga-gyeong is still set on leaving Joseon for America once she has earned some money. Nevertheless, her relationship with the resistance group makes her individual issues blend into the dangerous task she has committed herself to. It is found out that Philip is the one who captured her, and the so-called questioning is meant to test her reliability.

Instead of taking these charges at face value, Ga-gyeong makes an analysis of her surroundings and finds inconsistencies in what she sees. It is clear to her that the surroundings are not those of the dreaded police station, where the Koreans who fight for their independence from Japan are tortured; besides, she recalls hearing a tram although there is no logical way it could be here. She cannot understand why her captors had to blindfold her if she was being taken to a real police station.

Ga-gyeong states that she does not want to put herself into danger for the cause of the independence movement and requests permission to leave. At the point when Philip threatens to kill her, So-ran comes forth and tells the reason behind her commitment. Ga-gyeong’s assumed identity, Seo Hee, belonged to So-ran’s daughter, who was killed by the senior Japanese official they wanted to eliminate. This fact makes So-ran’s struggle personal, as there are not only political reasons behind it. There is also another unpleasant fact; it appears that the assurance of taking Ga-gyeong to America was a lie. Resistance members hope that she will stay loyal due to her willingness to be away from Korea.

100 Days of Deception Ep 4 also highlights the world outside of Shinichi and Tae-woong. Shinichi’s wife is having breathing problems, which poses serious questions regarding her well-being, while the son of Shinichi is trying to find out about his mother’s Korean heritage, but he doesn’t want to tell his father anything. These issues have opened up new questions about their family background.

Ga-gyeong is trying to adjust to her new position at the Government-General, but Tae-woong can still sense something strange in her behaviour. It gets especially intriguing when he insists on using the staircase instead of taking the elevator for some errands. After she has trouble walking because of her injured ankle, he takes her to see the traditional doctor, who inspects her injury along with other bruises on her body. This small act of Tae-woong’s caring side shows some compassion behind his tough facade, although Ga-gyeong is still wary of telling him the truth.

When Philip comes to pick up medicine for his wife and asks her to accompany Ga-gyeong back, the mission becomes even more complicated. She finds herself once again sandwiched between the resistance, her American husband, and Tae-woong, who becomes even more suspicious and might ruin her whole mission. In the resistance, she learns some details about the Government-General and its personnel, which she would need to know for carrying out her assassination plan. She learns that Shinichi is supposed to come to the ceremony at Keijo Imperial University Library and give an award to a young Korean boy.

But then, Ga-gyeong catches wind of a rumour indicating that she has yet another engagement scheduled that evening. This rumour finds its way to So-ran, although the resistance is not sure whether they should take the warning from her. The resistance is busy planning for an ambush when Tae-woong calls Ga-gyeong on the phone in English, asking her about any plan for the evening.

At the end of 100 Days of Deception Episode 4, it settles all these doubts in a brutal manner. The resistance forces have made preparations to ambush Shinichi’s car to stop him from getting away from the attack. Unfortunately for them, the whole thing ends up becoming a shootout, resulting in Jang Dong-jin being severely injured while trying to escape with his fellow members. Law enforcement starts tracking down these suspects, and the failure of the operation puts the entire group in more danger than before. So-ran is now needed for her sniper skills in the middle of this situation; things only get worse when Fukuda shows up at the end of the episode.

100 Days of Deception Episode 3-4 Review

I am really enjoying how 100 Days of Deception is developing its characters while gradually increasing the stakes of its story. The 100 Days of Deception ep 3 and 4 proved to be even more exciting since the problems of Ga-gyeong began interfering with the dangerous schemes of the resistance organisation. The choice of the heroine to collaborate with So-ran and Philip turns out to be quite unexpected since she acts in such a way not because she feels devoted to her country but simply wants to run away to the USA.

Being an intelligent girl, she manages to set her own conditions, but the deeper she delves into all these processes, the more difficult it becomes for her to keep everything under control. The history of Ga-gyeong is one of the most important aspects of this story. The actions of Mun-mak, the ways he humiliates and abuses her, explain why she is such a person who does not trust anyone. It is not only about her desire to have a better future but about the last hope to forget all the suffering that she had to endure before.

Moreover, I really liked how 100 Days of Deception kdrama episode 4 revealed the intelligence of Ga-gyeong, who understood that her interrogation was staged by the resistance. However, her anger at the fact that she was tested reveals that it will be difficult for the resistance to earn her trust. The involvement of So-ran in the plot gives another aspect to the plot. The discovery that the name used by Ga-gyeong belongs to So-ran’s daughter, who had been killed by the man they were after, justifies her dedication and zeal in this respect.

At the same time, I cannot say that I fully approve of how she and Philip continue to use Ga-gyeong as a pawn in their game and expect her to sacrifice herself to protect them, especially since there was no guarantee that they would ever take her to America. On the other hand, I begin to be interested in the character of Tae-woong. His interest in Ga-gyeong at the clinic looks strange for someone from the colonial administration, and I wonder how well he understands the country around him.

The last shootout is certainly one of the best scenes of these episodes. The consequences of the move made by the resistance despite their scepticism towards Ga-gyeong’s information prove to be deadly, with Jang Dong-jin being wounded during this failed operation, making it all very real. As soon as the resistance feels that they have enough information to make a move, everything begins to fall apart, putting Ga-gyeong in an even tougher spot than before. Now that Fukuda has appeared, I wonder how the resistance will manage to get out of this situation and if Tae-woong’s suspicion will finally lead to the exposure of Ga-gyeong.
